Blood sugar levels

A little confused. When I was first diagnosed with type 2 I was told my blood sugar level was 55. I just phoned my doctors for blood test result and was told my blood glucose is 4.4, what is in comparison to 55? Can anyone shed some light on this please.

Hi Paul , welcome to the forum. TBH I’m a little confuse too , could you have mis heard and it was 44? Or was the 4.4 from an in the spot finger prick test.

You see their are two measurements for the Hb1ac, the old % system ie 5.5 and the not so new system that they should now be using ie 37

As you can see the chart doesn’t go below 5.0 /. 31 which is why I am asking could you have mis heard or was it from an on the spot fingerpick Test.

As Ljc says, 55 is presumably HbA1c (an indication of blood glucose over the last 3 months) and 4.4 is likely a blood glucose reading (so a value at a point in time). 4.4 mmol/l is normal, 55 is higher than normal (suggesting that your blood glucose is often higher (too often higher) than 4.4).

Indeed. 55 is higher than normal (that is, non-diabetic), but nothing to panic about. (I'm sure we've all had higher.)
