Hi,

I was diagnosed with T2 this week and it has been interesting, the amount of conflicting information I've received is just amazing.

Anyway just spent a few hours looking round this forum and feel much better. Was advised not to bother with a self test kit, but I can see now how this will help and settle some of the conflicts for me.

I'm 6ft and weight in at 14.5 stone, my HbA1c was 80. I've been put on Metformin, just one a day for the first week.

Thanks again,

Simon.

Hi Simon
I’m a new T2 as well. Good luck with the metformin. I’m on 4 a day now and seem to be over the worst of the side effects - although there is a slow release version which can help if they become too much.
Lots of very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly people on here. I’m sure they can guide you on changes to diet etc better than I can. So far I’m finding reducing my carbs is helping. 🙂

Hi Simon, welcome to the forum 🙂 Glad you are already finding the forum helpful! One of the reasons that there is such a lot of often conflicting information around is because we're all different, and what might work perfectly for one person won't necessarily work for another. As such, you need to learn your own tolerances for different food choices in order to manage your blood sugar levels well and also to retain maximum flexibility in your diet which will make it more sustainable in the long term 🙂

There are some basics though, which will get you started. I'd recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter for starters, and getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. It's good to hear that you are considering getting a monitor, without the information it will give you, you are just guessing 🙄 Many of our members who have to buy their own use the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50. Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S and Testing on a budget so you can get the most out of it 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be very happy to help 🙂

Thanks for the replies,

No problems with the metformin yet, but it is early days.

Yes Northerner we're all different and that's the penny that dropped for me today. Got the full SD Codefree kit on order now, read that article very good will have a look at that book too.

Just trying too cook a proper meal now.

Thanks again,

Simon.

Welcome Simon, sounds like you are getting your head around things 🙂 So glad you joined the forum, so ask any questions you might have :D

Hi Simon, welcome to the forum. I see you’ve been given excellent advise so I won’t repeat it.
Their is one piece of important advise I can give you. Make sure whatever changes you make to your diet and exersize is sustainable, in other words don’t be so drastic that you are only setting yourself up to fail.
This is a marathon not a sprint 🙂.

Why not come and see what we’ve been eating, it might just give you a pleasant supprise

Very good point....I think I do enough exercise already, so was wondering about that, I'm pretty sure if I upped it I wouldn't be able to keep it up long term. So yes think i'll stick with my present routine and just see how the new diet works out first.

Really impressed with the welcome guys,

Thanks again.
