Relationship to Diabetes

Hi I have been a Type 1 for 53 years and started out with no testing equipment and relied solely on 'instinct' for BG guides. Have just started Libre fast glucose monitor and although it's a game changer especially when out and active, I feel it should be used with some caution. Recently I overdosed on glucose thinking a hypo was still looming and not realising the 10 min interstitial lag time! Now I will do a finger prick test post hypo! I am not new to this condition but welcome the forum for its invaluable information and experience!

Hi @Myrhan welcome to the forum. I too have found the Libre to be a game changer.
Youre right not to rely on it for hypo’s due to that time lag, yup I’ve done it too.

You’ve sure seen a lot of changes in equipment over the years

Hi @Myrhan, welcome 🙂 I have found that the libre arrows help me head off a hypo, which is where I find the information most helpful, even if the number isn't. If the Libre tells me I'm hypo and I don't feel any symptoms I always fingerprick to find out what's really going on 🙂

We have quite a few members with 50 years+ of living with diabetes, I imagine it was quite a shock and difficult when you were diagnosed originally 😱 You're certainly right though, we are learning all the while because nothing seems to stand still with diabetes! 🙂

Absolutely things have changed mainly for the better especially modern equipment and 4 mm needles! I remember having to sterilise my injection equipments in a pan of boiling water haha! However I cannot get funding for my first glucose monitor!

HbA1ac 48! Wow that's good Yes? Mine tends toward a 60. I'm hoping the Libre will help better those results. Yes equipment and the knowledge of diabetes has improved. It helps me a great deal to be a part of a forum where I can draw on fellow D's experiences. Never had that in the old days!

Hello and welcome @Myrhan , glad you've joined us 🙂

The interstitial lag is difficult to manage with hypos, cgm showing double arrows down whilst finger prick test showing panic over. I still misjudge it - but it's work in progress... 🙄

My 38 Hb1ac is really down to the Libre, it scares my practice nurse silly as she thinks I am having loads and loads of hypo’s, I am not. It’s all down to the graph , direction arrows and lots and lots of swiping, I would hate to bodge my fingers as many times as I swipe lol.

You should find the Libre helps you a lot.

Yes I'm having the same problem. I'm glad you mentioned PANIC, getting alot of those heart thumping moments. It is a work in progress!
