Hi all,

So I am hoping someone out there can explain why my blood sugar spikes after eating a feta and spinach quiche with a side of green veggies? I injected my usual ratio of insulin to carbs and yet my sugar still spikes hours after eating it. I checked 2 hours after eating and it was 10.4 (sugar was 7 before eating) so I injected a correction dose of 1unit, I checked another 2 hours after this correction and my sugar was 11.2, why??? I know it might seem daft but I would love someone to shed some light on this.

Thank you

Emma

@emma graham It doesn’t sound daft at all , it’s a pain in the backside when that happens.
I can think of five possibilities.
Not in any particular order
I’m guessing that the fat in the quiche slowed things down somewhat so that the glucose started to build up after your insulin had run out .
Could it be that your insulin has been compromised , so is less effective .
Poor absorption of the insulin.
Your body knows you are not well before you do.
Or the horrible DF (diabetes fairy) that @Northerner does his best to keep restrained usually buried deep in his garden with something heavy on top has escaped again and paid you a visit :D.

I hope your levels have returned to normal now.

Hi Emma

Something like a quiche could be quite high in fat, so this mixed in with the carbs will make them convert to Glucose more slowly, so you will get a rise quite a bit later than for other faster acting carbs. For Pizza I have to allow from hours for the conversion to glucose. For A curry !!!! It is just not worth considering for me.If you are in a pump this is when the multiwave delivery comes into its own and you can ask the pump to deliver the insulin over a period of time to account for this. On MDI it is possible to split your injection, you just have to remember to take the second half of the bolus.

There are certain foods that simply make me spike after a meal. My husbands homemade bread is delicious and accompanies our boiled eggs on Saturday mornings. However I know I will spike soon after. So I get round this by pre-blousing about 30 min before breakfast. Another way round the problem.

Then there is the Diabetes Fairy who simply pops in and just does its own thing when there is no explanation. That is what D is like sometimes, for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Thank you so much for this reply, I will try splitting my dose and see if that works, I do this for my pizza and it works a treat, I don’t know why I didn’t think of doing that myself, especially as they are both high in fat. Thanks again. Emma

Hiya, thanks for your reply, my sugars are back to normal now. I am going to try splitting my dose especially considering your suggestion that it is high in fat and will slow the release of glucose. Thanks so much. Emma

Think you have it right there... the sheer quantity of calories from the fats (and a pastry base? have to go somewhere, so the conversion to glucose is a slow but quite powerful surge into the bloodstream. I don't see a spike so much as something like Table Mountain.. hours after eating when the bolus (boluses in fact..) has gone away..
