Hi Janet, we have some online learning tools that you might find helpful?
Type 2 Diabetes and Me offers general support and is broken down in to modules.
We have also recently developed a Learning Zone which can provide you with tailored online learning. It is designed to give you content that suits you and your existing knowledge.
What is the progress regarding your current situation with the DVLA?
The DVLA's guidance to Assessing Fitness to Drive states on Page 73, that those managing diabetes with non-insulin injectables, may drive and need not inform the DVLA, providing they meet the criteria (on Page 122 - basically checking that you have not had a severe hypo or hypo at the wheel) and are under medical review (attending appointments).
The DVLA should be notified if clinical information is provided that indicates that there is a need for the DVLA to conduct a medical review.
So it would imply that either the GP felt you had not met the criteria on Page 122, were not under medical review, or has another concern regarding hypos, hypo awareness or peripheral vision.
Unfortunately, if the DVLA have started a medical review, you will need to proceed with the process as they will need medical confirm that you are fit to drive (rather than take your word for it, understandably).
You can contact the Diabetes UK Helpline (0345 123 2399, Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm) if you would like more in-depth guidance on this, or with raising a complaint about your practice if this something you wish to do.
