Hi newly diagnosed and also hypothyroidism, struggling to lose required weight. Help please

Hi SLC are you able to give us a little more information about yourself...if you can that would help members offer the right support/advice...do you know what your blood test results were...are you on any medication yet...have you been given any 'real advice' about managing your diabetes or booked on an education...if you'd prefer not to answer those questions that's understandable...however there is a wealth of information 'out there' about how to manage type2 diabetes...too much it can be overwhelming...it would be good to know how much you know...what if any support you have been given by your health care team...so if you could help us with a little more detail we can tailor any advice we give/offer/suggest.

Hello, My HBA1c is 50 diagnosed in May 18. I have not been put onto medication yet but have been told I must reduce my weight significantly by 30lbs approx. My medication is Levothyroxine 25mg for under active thyroid, Ramipril 2.5mg and Simvasatin 25mg. I'm trying to reduce weight by eating low carbs/low sugar diet but I'm struggling and the weight is just not coming off as I hoped. Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks. SLC

Hi SLC...since you know little about type 2 diabetes (pretty much the same as most of us at diagnosis)...I believe one of the best things you could do would be to get hold of a copy of Gretchen Becker's book 'Type 2 Diabetes The First Year'...the author is T2 herself she writes about her diabetes month by month from her own diagnosis onwards...she explain what diabetes is...how/why it develops...whether we need to test our blood sugars...what benefits we derive from that...there is also advice on diet...activity...for me most importantly she dispels some of the myths surrounding T2...it is available on Amazon so you can preview it before deciding whether to buy it...or borrow it from your library...it's well written & very easy to follow...what we need to avoid most is food high in carbohydrates (carbs).. .there are the obvious ones such as cakes...white bread...potatoes...there are foodstuffs with hidden carbs...some veggies & fruit...at 58 you are definitely in diabetic range but that's far lower than mine at diagnosis (mine was triple that)...however with a little application you can reduce those numbers once you find the right sort of diet...increase your activity (if able) and reducing your carbs is a good way to lose the weight...I cannot recommend the book highly enough...try to read it...if you have any specific questions post them here...I'm sure one of us will be able to help/

Great thank you for your encouragement and help.
The book really helped me to understand what type 2 diabetes was SLC...how to approach it...how high carb foods really were the enemy for diabetics...some have managed to reduce their levels very quickly...others (like me) took longer...whichever way you feel comfortable with is best...don't rush...find the right routine...good luck.

As @Bubbsie says, find something that works, a sustainable diet along with exercise will go a long way toward managing your D.

Welcome! As Bubbsie said it is manageable but you need to understand how to manage your diet, once you get the hang of that, the weight will come down naturally :D
