Hi everyone

My nana has been disagnosed with type two diabetes and would like to be able to monitor her bloood sugar levels.

Her practice nurse said they couldn’t provide her with a machine but she would still like one.

They did mention there are manufacturers or providers I live that often provide them for free.

Does anyone know where?

Hi Mark, Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your Nana I would like to reassure that with the right info and a bit of work that Diabetes is a condition that can be well managed.

It’s the ongoing cost of the testing strips you have to watch out for, those you can buy in chemists of get free have test strips that cost between £15 to £30 for a pot of 50, which if used to find out how the various carbohydrates affect us as in this blog

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum 🙂 Manufacturers will often provide a free meter, but this is in order to get you to use the testing strips which will only work in their particular machine - test strips, as far as I know, are never free, apart from maybe 10 strips that come with the meter. The test strips can cost up to £30 for 50 strips for some meters 😱

The cheapest option we have come across is the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50, and is used by many of our members who have to pay for the strips.

Hi @MarkGeordie
Free T2 meter here ...and test strips are cheap as well, there are quite a few manufacturers who offer free meter but then then strips are expensive afterwards, however the Tee2 is free and with cheap strips..@ £7.75

Remember to declare you are diabetic to avoid paying VAT when ordering strips ..!
Remember if ordering to order, free control solution and spare free battery too..

Thanks everyone.

I’ll take a look.

Just got the free batteries last week

Lucky you I got an E-mail at the time saying they could not send batteries through the post for my meter

Maybe it depends on whether they are lithium or just ordinary alkali?

All all the meters I have used use the round ones numbers 2032

This is on my currant meters website

Where do I order free of charge batteries?

Unfortunately at the present time we are unable to supply batteries directly to people using CONTOUR® blood glucose meters due to Royal Mail's new restrictions for the transport of lithium batteries. Should you require further batteries for your current CONTOUR® meter, please contact your Health Care Team. Alternatively, 3v lithium batteries are available to purchase at most supermarkets (please use the code CR2032).

I have never asked the meter companies for batteries, in over 15 years of using. I always buy and keep a spare with my meter.
