I think this is just another example of when one size doesn't fit all.

One thing I understand exists in the forum infrastructure is the ability to prefix a thread with given values, which could be set at T1, T2 or whatever. That could act as a heads-up, but is dependent on an individual selecting it when creating a thread, and not many might remember to do that, or understand it could even be done.

If nothing else, it could introduce another level of inconsistency.

See what I mean? Its impossible to please all of the people all of the time. 🙂

I feel that being 'Type' specific would just mean folks posts wouldn't get everyone's attention and either type can help the other out

There's always something 'new' to learn with diabetes though, even the ones here diagnosed since childhood will tell you they are still learning new things everyday x
Agree very much with this, I've been diagnosed 20+ years and had never been told about carb counting until I joined this forum. Along with the likes of 'new' insulins such as Tresiba and Toujeo which my DSN team wouldn't have considered if I hadn't learnt about them here, and gadgets like the freestyle libre. The advice given to newly diagnosed people is often the most up to date and this is constantly evolving, so I frequently look at the posts of people who have been newly diagnosed (for both T1 and T2!). It is a great way of making sure you yourself are up to date, particularly when your care team aren't the best.

Surely the question is what happens here & what the members here would like to see happen on this site...do we really need to critique other forums/sites...is that acceptable?.

People are discussing what they have seen elsewhere and expressing their preferences. I'm not sure I can see much critiquing going on?

If someone has experience of something negative relating to forums separated by type that might be a useful addition to the discussion - as long as it is phrased fairly and within forum guidelines.

Of course, if any members are uncomfortable with the content of, or language used in a post on the forum, they should report it so that it can be reviewed by the mods. 🙂

The trouble with type 1 and 2 is that doesn't include LADA , MODY or any other reason for diabetes. I Do like that people would like to see growth within the forum though. My personal opinion(and it's my opinion and i'm not forcing it on anyone so please don't take offence) is that there could be room for growth on the forum and it could be more subject specific and would help people navigate thier particular query or question much more easily. But i think ideas can mean change and people don't like change generally. Like mine your idea will probably go down like a lead balloon but hey ho, thats ideas for you! some you win some you lose lol 😉 It seems to me that DUK like to keep this site completely open on all subjects and inclusive of everyone and are quite resistant to change. Like i said my opinion.. please don't shoot me for it! 😉:D

Another place (it wasn't a forum) on the net where I spent time, people joined "groups". There was a generally rule of you don't talk about one group in another. It was particularly being specific about what was said &/or naming members. Or promoting other groups.
On occasion, particularly if you talk generally and avoided naming the group or members, you could bring up other groups.
A big no no was carrying "drama" over from one group to another.
I supported this and feel it can be applied to this forum.

Diabetics meet in other places on the web. It's OK to mention occasionally. In a discussion on how things work is an example.

Yes I agree with you Ralph it is okay to mention them but not directly or negatively in any sense.

Not at all Martin, it's been a very interesting conversation, and it's absolutely right for people to make suggestions and then see what others think 🙂

Thanks. @everydayupsanddowns I've read most of them, and I'm not sure what side of the debate they're on lol..

Actually, the forum has changed quite a lot since it first started in 2008. We have introduced Pumping, Newbies, Exercise and Sport, Food/carb queries and recipes, Events, Parents, The Weight Loss group, Pregnancy and the Entertainment sections 🙂 Most recently, the 'Welcome' section was added 🙂

I like a lot of others, just go to 'New Posts' so when I open a post unless I see that eg EDUAD has posted it and therefore already know he's T1, or someone else I know already - I don't have a clue. But if there's a reason I need to know - eg if you had asked what books were useful to you - I'd look at your 'identity' where you tell us what type you are. No use recommending Gretchen Becker to the parent of a newly diagnosed T1 baby - or Ragnar Hanas to a 68yo T2!

I joined this forum in order to see the content just after it first appeared and read every thread - nothing at all of any use to me personally at that time so I had to look elsewhere - and found the place. It was all inclusive too and it's never been a problem. It also was able to start the very first 'pregnancy' section available in the UK and a few other sections such as recipes, which this one didn't have until much more recently.

Sadly the old forum and website closed but we replaced it and were able to watch those first pregnancies happily conclude - one with twins! - and many more since then. Still shedloads of info on the website that isn't handy anywhere else.

I think compartmentalising people risks divisions that should never be there - all of us know info about all sorts of things that simply apply to 'people' let alone what we know about diabetes LOL

I like the ✻inclusiveness✻ of Diabetes UK ..and happen to like this website for the same reason.

If our threads get divided into ✻Type 1✻ and ✻Type 2✻ categories ..it will be an irreversible change.
