I have been a Type 2 diabetic for a while. Back on medication (not happy). Now on sukkarto sr 500mg one per day, 2nd day and not liking it at all. Stomach discomfort, feeling generally yuck. Is this normal with sukkarto?

Hi Tracey, and welcome to the forum
If I remember rightly Sukkarto is a brand name for Metformin, which unfortunately is dubbed metfartin by some members of the forum as it can cause stomach discomfort.

It normally goes away after a few days up to a couple of weeks.

I'm on normal Metformin 500 mg tds, my stomach is so far ok, but horrible metallic taste in mouth, is this liable to continue..?

It does disappear, eventually

I'm on regular metformin, not the slow release version, but the tummy trouble does settle down after a couple of weeks. I found eating as many veggies as possible and having Greek yoghurt for breakfast helped.
Good luck

Like the idea of Greek yoghurt. Will give it a try. It is the nausea I don’t get on with. I hate feeling sick. How easy is it to stay on the low carb diet? How long did it take for you to see your blood sugar level to come down? sorry for all the questions

Hi Tracey.
I've found low carb relatively easy to stick to. It just takes a bit of time and planning. Some folks on here do very low carb (perhaps only 50g of carbs per day), I follow more of a Mediterranean style diet, which is "lowish" carb (I limit myself to 100g of carb per day) and full of veg, salad, healthy fats and protein, because it's more sustainable long term for me personally. Most of my carbs come from vegetables, pulses, a little fruit and small portion of new potatoes or Quinoa or Bulgar wheat or a slice of Burgen bread. In modest portions these don't raise my blood glucose much. I discovered from self testing, that my blood glucose goes up enormously if I eat pasta, wheat cereals, oats, or anything made from flour like pastry etc.
To answer your second question, how long is a piece of string!!! It depends on how high your levels are to start with. At diagnosis my average level was 17.7, so it took about 4 months for me to achieve blood glucose levels in the healthy, normal range eating like this and taking metformin.... But everyone is different. If you eat lower carb than me, it will come down faster.
Hope that helps..... Good luck xxc

Welcome to the forum, unfortunately some people do have problems with meteor min it does often settle down but if it doesn't speak to your DN

Thank you so much Adele. It doesn’t seem so daunting now. I will sit down today and sort myself out.
My average level is 12.0 at the moment. Again, thank you. x
You're very welcome Tracey. Ask as many questions as you need to. It is daunting at first, but you will soon find your own way of managing this condition 😉

I got down to normal levels on 50 gm of carbs a day but have now dropped to 40 maximum to try to lose more fat.
I was on Metformin and a statin and was really ill - never been so miserable except when I was so ill the doctor was visiting twice a day.
The best thing I did was to throw out the tablets, as it means I stick to the diet for fear of getting a bad result and the doctor having reason to insist on tablets again. Not that it is at all difficult to eat low carb foods, it is the best way of eating.

Welcome, I’m on metformin and a statin and so far feeling ok, I have chosen the low carb option with no rice, potatoes or pasta and only burgen bread when I fancy a sandwich or toast. Fruit doesn’t work so well for me sadly, although I will admit that now and again I rebel and enjoy an apple 😉

Thank you. I am cutting back on rice, potatoes and pasta. Today has been a good food day and so far feeling pretty good.
