Hi @Paul hughes sorry to here about your diagnosis. How is your diabetes been treated? First thing to know is cut out or down on carbs and obvious sugar. Bread potatoes rice and pasta have high carbs which our body’s turn into glucose and can rise our BGL. Fruit can be full of sugars so avoid fruit juice. Berries are the best option.Eat lots of green veg ,good protein like chicken turkey. You will get lots of help and support welcome to the forum.Hi all

Yes If your on insulin don’t cut out all carbs ( that’s a mistake I made) fast acting insulin helps control the food (carbohydrates) we eat if you don’t have carbs or match the insulin to the amount of carbs it can easily lead to hypos. I learned to carb count pretty quickly. There’s a good book called cals/ carbs it’s £10 you can get it on line I found it in Waterstone it really helps figure out the carbs in your meal. Thanks I'm on metformin and insulin starting to do plenty of exercise and trying to cuts the carbs out of my diet
It all depends I was put on insulin and metformin at diagnosis I’d had a heart attack and my Hbac1 was above 12% over 113 with help on here and self discipline I’m now off NovoRapid and on a reduced lantus. But I’ve only done this under supervision and support from my DSN. I would never advise to stop taking an medication unless you have talked everything through with your GP/DSN. Coming of medications can be a goal you set yourself. First is to get control of BGL losing and extra weight( if over weight) exercise more( be careful when exercising on insulin you may need a slow release carb fruit wholemeal bread before as it can lower your BGL and hypo). So is it better to come of the Insulin ?
