Hi Bernice
Are you tracking your carbs, dropping carbs will help you both drop blood sugars and weight I use Nutrachek which you can download to keep track of everything you eat, if you drop the carbs the weight will follow..

Hi Martin I had not thought of that thanks I'll do that bernice

Welcome Bernice. I chose the low carb option, I don’t eat rice, pasta, potatoes and the only bread I use is Burgen, low carb linseed and soya if I want a sandwich or toast. Do you test your bloods? I found it essential to work out what foods work best for me, for example some people can eat a little fruit but I find even a few berries spike my sugars so not worth it. I do eat full fat Greek yoghurt with a little sugar free caramel to sweeten it. I eat a lot of stir fry food, asparagus, mushrooms, courgette and a bit of red or yellow pepper for a splash of colour. Eggs and bacon for breakfast, omelettes and loads of mixed salads. My weight is dropping better than any diet I have ever tried!

Welcome Bernice from a fellow T2.
I suggest you keep a food diary. Get a meter and self test. If you record your levels (before and 1-2 hours after eating), after a couple of weeks you should start to see a pattern. This will give you an idea of what affects your blood glucose levels, and how much.
It's not food generally that raises your BG levels. It's carbohydrates in particular. As diabetics we can eat some. It's a question of how much of which (and what else you eat it with, possibly).
The food diary and self testing will help you find out, as well as show what effect any changes have.
A possible change is to go from breakfast ceriel for eggs or bacon.

Hi Ralph thanks for your welcome I don't do a diary no but that to is a great idea I don't eat carbe my problem is not checking myour portion size so I will do the diary so I can check each portion thanks bernice

Well - unless you test your own blood glucose - how on earth do you know what that particular food is doing to it? - how do you know how much of it you can eat and it not have a detrimental effect?

Hi Bernice and welcome. I would recommend that you get a meter and self test. A lot of the medical profession tell Type 2's that they don't need to test but they are wrong! How else will you know which foods are spiking your blood (harming you!) I am Type 2, and I, like most on here, self test.

Until you get a meter try to cut down on carbs (ALL carbs, not just the obvious sugary stuff) and eat full fat. No semi-skimmed milk or low fat yogurts or spreads.

Let us know how you go on. Good luck! x

Hi and welcome to forum

If going out for the day I get up and eat breakfast - foods which I know will not cause a rapid increase in BG as I tested them with a meter, and then I fill a water bottle and off I go. When I get home in the evening I eat again.
It is perfectly possible to survive for weeks without food, so a few hours is not going to be a problem.

Hi Bernice. Ignore what you have been told about not testing. It's rubbish. I'm type 2 & I test, & it's because I test that I have manage to 'reverse' my diabetes. I put that in quotes, because really it's just very tight control rather than actual reversal, but it's a term the media use these days.🙂 You need to know how food affects your BG & that is impossible without testing. A lot on here use the SD Codefree as this has the cheapest test strips. Available from Amazon or the manufacturers, 'Home Health'. Test before food & 2 hours after. Ideally you want no more than a 2-3mmol/l rise.

As all before me said - testing (especially with carbs) will tell you how YOUR body reacts to that food. You might tolerate a food better than me so we cannot accept as a given that we can't have something. Only testing will give you this info, and also help you track your progress and bg stability.

Hi @Bernice and welcome to the forum.
I'll second everything already said about self testing for getting your blood glucose under good control.
If you are trying to lose weight, then look at your portion sizes, try to reduce snacking between meals, and/or try intermittent fasting (assuming you aren't on any medication which precludes that).
The food and recipes threads on here can be very useful for inspiration.
As for walking, definitely try a pedometer or fitness app. Have a look at Joe Wicks, body coach or Dr Chatterjee's HIIT training on YouTube.
Hope that gives you some ideas and good luck!

Testing is definitely best, I really would suggest you consider it, only way to learn what works for you as we are all different, this way you control your diabetes rather than it controlling you!

Another welcome to the forum @Bernice 🙂
