Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello everyone

I was diagnosed as type 1 seven months ago, or to be more accurate insulin deficient diabetic, cause not clear, no evidence of autoimmune cause.

Been on insulin injections since then, long and short lasting, and carb counting, and that all seems to be working, blood sugar levels are where they should be now, with HbA1c at 7.2%. I have had no “hypos”. So problem sorted as far as diabetic service is concerned.

However the underlying symptoms are getting worse, not better. Results of a scan plus extensive blood tests etc have not flagged any significant issues. Weight stable, good BMI, blood pressure within normal range. Age 57

It is strange that these symptoms started at the same time as I started my insulin injection regime. I felt far better with really quite high blood glucose levels than I do now.

Is this just a coincidence? Could I be having a negative reaction to the insulin? Are there other insulins I could try? Alternatively should I try a very low carb diet to reduce the amount of insulting I’m taking and see if that has an impact?

Current Symptoms
  • Sharp pain in extremities, toes, fingers, sometimes legs and arms –assume is peripheral neuropathy – could cope with this if it were the only pain.
  • Back, lower and middle, chest, belly, bottom, my “core”. Both constant ache and sharper pain. Some slight pain when urinating sometimes, uncomfortable after defecating. Pain in scrotum/testicles sometimes. This is the pain that makes it hard to sleep/work/function, either waking up in pain, or difficulty getting to sleep, also during the day. Taking paracetamol and codeine and ibuprofen regularly.
  • Feel week, tired, and slightly disorientated, feeling that I’m not thinking clearly, move much slower, slightly lightheaded. Talking sometimes is hard work, can feel it in my gut-diaphragm?
  • Constant slight background wheezing, but not out of breath.
Any idea anyone?

Anyone had a similar experience?

Many thanks

Chase

Hello @Chase , welcome to the forum. I am no medic ok , so I don’t feel able or that I should answer your main query, but I know it’s possible to have a reaction to insulin, check the patient info leaflet to see if your symptoms match.
Over the years I h@ve noticed that if you have a condition/illness some medics/ nurses etc tend to put everything down to that illness/ condition or as in my case down to being a bad diabetic and that’s why I’m on insulin etc 🙄.

The trouble with the Hb1ac as you probably know is that it is an average of the glucose that has stuck to the blood cells over the last 12 or so week as that is how long the cells last and therefore it’s only a guide to how good our control is, so although going by this chart.

You are in the good range, I’m thinking giving us an idea of your pre meal and 2 hrs post mealtime also before bed and waking BG Test would be more helpful for people here.

Just had another thought, with peripheral neuropathy as our glucose levels improve, the nerves can start repairing themselves, this is a painful process, this may account for some of your pain but imo prossibly not all of it, we have some very experienced people on here , hopefully they will be along soon.
I advise keep seeking advise from your team, gp etc till they pin your problem down.

Maybe time to change your GP Chase? Either that or request a referral🙂
