So the results are in, not so good, where do I start? Bear in mind that I was sick with the flu & complications in March & the blood work was taken at the beginning of the month and I have been off the reservation slightly

  • A1c - 40 (from 38)... 39 is the threshold per ADA
  • LDL - 140 (from 122)... too many of those Empanadas etc.... Have already got serious about my diet again Trigs & HDH OK
  • Vitamin D - Low (if I remember about 1/2 of what it should be)
  • BP - High (89/150) back on Lisinopril
  • Ketones in pee - The Practice Nurse wasn't phased when I said that there were no surprises there, think she suspects I'm low carbing

Another A1c & Lipid test in June as the PN accepts that illness could have played a part in my numbers

Plantars wart on my heel, burned off, back in 10 days for second round of freezing, that'll be nice to gave fixed as I currently just grind it down.... didn't know what it was until yesterday

The Plan
Should do something with these results & not just rely on my current regime...
  • Back on my diet, strict, the treats were becoming a little too regular
  • Water, I tend to drink water first thing & during yoga... A few pints a day but I should have some during the day
  • exercise, now that it's spring time to get the bike out (unfortunately the garage door broke last night so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to fix it😱)

Sounds like a plan Martin 🙂 I'm sure your illness must have played a part in the slightly elevated numbers. Good luck getting back on track 🙂

Don’t panic, Martin, I wouldn’t describe that as going off the rails, particularly the BP. Get yourself a BP monitor- Omron machines are cheap and accurate, I bet you are normal most of the time.

And I agree with Northie, the illness may well have nudged the numbers.

I also agree with you about the Empanadas🙂

Best of luck🙂

Great to see you responding with a plan @Martin Canty - hope the June results show the benefit of the effort you are planning.

I forgot to mention goals.... A1c 5.5 LDL 120 (I know I need to get it under 100, but baby steps)

That is a shame Martin but have heard if you are unwell it can elevate results. Are you in the US? I think their "normal" levels are lower than ours. Think our threshold is 42. Not sure. Mine have gone from normal to re-diabetic again (not sure why). Back to the drawing board for me.

Good luck with your new regime.,

Are you in the US?
Yes, I am, ExPat living in California...... However, joined this forum as it's got a great attitude & none of the fighting that the ADA forum has... Added bonus that I can reminisce about life in the UK through you guys.

California is beautiful. Hubby and I went there a few years back. San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Big Sur drive, Carmel, Solvang, Anaheim. Then Calico, and Palm Springs, Grand Canyon and Vegas and Sedona. Forgot Yosemite too. Would love to stay longer in San Francisco.

Hi Martin. The illness probably played a part in your results. Pleased to hear you have a plan for getting back on track.

You are just the man from what I have seen to get back on track. Does low carbing cause Ketones in pee then?

It's a state of Nutritional Ketosis, as the fats break down they produce Ketone Bodies which are then flushed out of the system, anyone who goes very low carb 30-50g (depending on age, health etc) will likely achieve nutritional Ketosis.

I am evaluating my diet (hence management of D) by testing my Ketone levels using pee test strips; that way I can determine if there is too much protein in my diet & reduce accordingly, if I have the calculations right I should be consuming about 4-8 oz of protein a day

Here is a very informative article on it.... https://nutritionalketosisforhealth.com/what-is-nutritional-ketosis/

Here is an image putting the various diet strategies into context, I tend to bounce between Ketogenic & Mediterranean
