Hi I am really struggling to know portion sizes for food, and am struggling to get what food I should buy .Is there a recipe book for us out there. And ideas for a days eating?

Take a look at this thread, it may give you some ideas, remember though there are a mix of Type 1 and Type 2 replies so that's why there may be a big difference in amounts of carbohydrates eaten, it's carbohydrates we have to be careful of so cutting down on things like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc is a good idea, here's that link

Do you test your bloods? A quick and filling tea could be an omelette with salad/veggies xx

Similar to me ,diabetic nurse gave me a leaflet about foot care ,told me to be sensible, and to go on a course for diabetes.Gave group a call, left a message waiting for a reply.

No I wasnt told anything about that. Thanks for food idea xx
Ah right ok I would suggest just reducing your carbohydrate intake then as you cant test to see what effect if any they are having on you x

Also do you weigh your portion of porridge? I only ask as many diabetes find their levels cant cope with porridge and it pushes them rather high xx

Hi. Yes, reduce the carbs and have enough fats and proteins to keep you feeling full. Watch the porridge as it does cause sugar spikes as it's a carb. It's better in the form of muesli and cold milk as the cells don't get broken down. Eggs and bacon for breakfast are fine.

Well I didn't even get told about foot care or a clinic!!!!

I just cooked a chop for dinner, when it was about done I sliced up a sweet pepper, a courgette and broke up some mushrooms, lifted the chop up and dropped the veges into the pan, put the chop on top and then the lid. Left it on low heat and stirred it a few times.
When all was cooked in the rich dark juices I strained out the food and have just eaten it. I'll save the juices and maybe make a cauliflower base soup tomorrow, or perhaps do a casserole with some beef. I have some mild onions so I can start it off with chopped onion, maybe add some celery to the dish - it is a good use for the outside sticks which can be a bit tough.
Low carb cookery is very simple once you get into it, and so delicious.

I would say watch the porridge as some can tolerate it, some cannot. It is worth testing to see what effect it has.

Some books I have found useful are "Reverse your Diabetes" by Dr David Cavan. (Used to be a diabetes consultant here but now works on research in the EU). "the 8 week Blood Sugar Diet." "Blood Sugar Diet Recipes" all by Michael Moseley. "Davina's sugar free diet book." I miss out the potatoes, pasta and rice that she puts in. Tom Kerridge's dopamine diet book. Some find the recipes fiddly but I don't mind as I like cooking. Joe Wicks has a book called "Lean in 15" which consists of low carb and carb rich recipes so really only the low carb ones may suit.

david Cavan is not suggesting everyone can reverse diabetes. He just means keeping it under better control.
