Interesting. But that’s all it is, not a pointer to a cure. How come Steve Redgrave didn’t cure his diabetes with his fearsome training regime?

I think his was a form of Type 2. I once read an interview with him that said he feared he'd caused his diabetes with the massive overloading of carbs he had for his training.
I wonder if there's something in this Type 1 remission, thinking of our own @Northerner, with his marathon running, who now no longer needs any basal?

Quite clearly not a proper Type 1. Yes you can reduce insulin requirements through exercise just as someone with operational pancreatic beta cells would but in T1 you can't stop it completely. Reading the background to it, it seems the story is with this man they've identified a rare gene that luckily for him enabled his beta cells to 'restart'. Whether he is or was T2 or some rare genetic type he wasn't your common or garden T1.

Mind you, Matt, there’s no such thing as a common or garden T1 either. We’re all different, age of onset, insulin requirement, comorbities, tendency to get complications - everybody is different. Your bog standard T1 is a rare beast.
