Type 2
Hi everyone, new to this forum. I was told I have type 2 in Nov last year. So have been really strict with everything and after my 3 month HbA1c test my mmol has come down from 70 to 45. I already weighted very little to begin with and have lost even more weight to the point where I look ill! All my clothes are lose for me. Every single person has commented how much weight I have lost and I really do not like to way I look! If anyone has any advice on perhaps putting that weight back on but obviously in a healthy way. I weighed about 60kgs and now weight about 54kgs. Thank you

HI Harvi and Welcome
Have you looked at the Food and Carbs thread? Wonderful advice there especially on What did you eat yesterday.
What is your typical diet may I ask?

Hi Vince, No I haven't yet but will do thanks. Typically I would have tea, toast and cereal or egg toast or beans and toast for breakfast. Lunch usually pasta dish with vegetables or chicken, stir fry, rice dish, soup and break and a piece of fruit and for dinner 2 chapatti with a veg curry and glass of milk before bed. Snack on fruit or couple of biscuits.

Hi Again Harvi
Do you test with a meter?
Seems a fair amount of carbs there Pasta, rice, biscuits, toast, cereal. You have done very well with your HbA1c Do you count your carb intake?

They gave me one a few weeks ago but haven't used yet. No but I think I need to...plus I am also on Metformin, was on 3x500, since mmol has come down I requested to reduce Metformin. Doc was reluctant but agreed so now on 2x500.

yes you should Harvi. I think you will be shocked at your levels afer rice and pasta. Test before you eat and 2 hours after and record what you ate and the results. That way to build up a food diary that shows you what is ok for you and then you don't need to test if the post levels are fine. Are you on any meds? Metformin for example?
The ideal BG level band is 4-7 mmol/L before you eat and up to 8.5 2 hours after you eat. Most of us aim to keep the levels between 5 and 7
Many also are on Low Carb/High Fat/High protein diet. That thread will point you in the right direction.

Yeah I used to do this when I was pregnant. Metformin yes, also causes weight loss.

Ibelieve it does I was on it for 3 months but taken off it. Not needed anymore
It may be worth looking at a low carb diet Harvi

So how tall are you?

Metformin helps with weight loss, mostly by suppressing hunger. It doesn't directly make you loose weight (but doesn't cause you to put it on either).

I did have that convo with Doc about eventually coming off it if all looks good over a period of time and she said I will never come of the meds.

Let your Doctor tell that to a few drugfree posters here! 🙂

mine came down form 78 to 33 in 3 months and I am drug free now. I only took 1 500 Metformin per day for 3 months. I was supposed to take 2 but i didn't read the instruction lol 1 per day fro 1 week then increase to 2 per morning and evening I just never did that.
Your doc is not strictly correct and your drop from 70 to 45 is in itself very good. I shoudl add I also lost 15 kilos in weighht during that period also.

Hi Mark, I'm 5ft 7in.
The reason I asked is because you are a similar weight to my wife - but you are a good bit taller then her. Yes, you are a bit on the low side. Increasing calories via fat's and proteins is a good way to go without making your blood glucose levels go high.

Yep, although two things 1) if you stay on drugs you didn't fail, that's the way it is sometimes 2) Metformin has a long term heart protective effect, so staying on it isn't a bad thing

Self testing would be worthwhile, although you HbA1c is improving it doesn't tell the whole picture sometimes.
