Stupid question probably, but I was wondering if there was any silent insulin pens, (meal time novorapid), as when I am out and about I am too scared to use my meal time insulin because I am worried that people will think I am taking drugs in the toilets. As this has happened before, and someone called me disgusting for it, even though you can see its not drugs. I know I shouldn't be afraid or ashamed but I am. I know this is dangerous because I eat alot when I am out away from home, also lots of carbs.

So is there anyway I can silence the novorapid pen, or get another one which isn't so loud with the clicks???

Do you use a 'Flexpen' KK ? I ask because the Novopens, the non disposable sort where you reload with a new cartridge of insulin, instead of throwing them away and starting a whole new pen when they are empty, are a lot smoother when you dial up the dose and depress the end of the pen to deliver it. Flexpens do everything they do with accompanying audible 'clicks'. You would have to get a) a new pen and b) your prescription changed to cartridges instead of Flexpens but they are also more Eco-friendly cos there isn't all that horrible non-recyclable hard plastic going in the bin every time - apart from being so much more comfortable to hold and use.

Aye, the Echo pens for novo rapid are better on every front plus it tells you what your last dose was.

Such ignorant rudeness! I would say "it's insulin, you idiot!"

I found when I was in Hong Kong, people staring at me every time I injected at restaurants. They didn't say anything but, they were watching me with bugged out eyes. One family friend at a family dinner said to me you shouldn't do that at the table.

Which leaves me wondering how diabetics there cope if they have to inject in toilets: they can be disgusting holes in the ground. Sure, in most of the touristy places in Hong Kong Island & Kowloon the toilets are to western standards, to certain degree, but, still a fair number in the New Territories are indeed holes in the ground.

Even western ones are full of bacteria however much they are cleaned and I just refuse to do it in there - however we already know KK is terribly embarrassed, far too embarrassed to be open about it anywhere, unlike you and I, etc Lanny.

Flying Air Malaysia from Heathrow to Brisbane via KL, on one leg my husband and I were on two of the middle 4 seats, the other two were occupied by an oriental couple, they smiled to say hello but never heard anything in English theafter. They were served their meal before us - husband took both meals onto his fold down tray whilst she reached for her handbag and fished out a meter, tested her blood, and injected her Novorapid. Hilarious really - so random the chances of being smack next to another diabetic - let alone one on the same insulin! (she used Kwikpens, as I used to, to begin with, too!)

I use the clicks to count the dose out when I’m out and about. They’re there for folk with limited eyesight, which must be obvious, and which I haven’t got.

What I have got is the nerve to do it in public. If anyone doesn’t like it, that’s their problem, not mine. It’s not as if you have a rubber tube tied round your arm searching for a vein in your elbow. Mind, I just inject through my shirt, not exposing any flesh. Free demo Glasgow, Friday🙂

The Novo Echo pen is fairly quite, it can deliver half unit doses when needed , shows you how many hours ago and how much you injected, it also looks good a bit like a fountain pen till you take the cap off.

Please don’t inject/test in toilets , no matter how clean they seem their is too many germs for me to consider using them to inject.
In cafes, restaurants I inject Into my tum or thigh discreetly under the table. mostly through my clothes like Mike Though this is not recommended.

Please try not to worry about what people may think, you need your Insulin to stay alive which is far more important isn’t it 🙂 , in fact Most people are too busy or involved in what they are doing to notice us injecting and if by chance they do the majority won’t say anything .
