Hi,
Had a recent blood pressure checkup , (had high bp for a few years and until recently had it under control with medication.)
BP was off the scale 190/90 ish... they also took bloods, first came back they said sugar was high so had another test, got a call yesterday from the receptionist saying I had diabetes and could I come in Monday to see the doc...
So as you can imagine head is spinning at the moment, trying not to think too much until I see the doc... they didn't give me any values just said the numbers were dangerously high..!!

looking back I have been feeling under the weather for a while now... nothing I could put my finger on, but generally run down, tired all the time and no energy... I'm assuming this is either the high bp or the high bg that is doing this, so now its been diagnosed hopefully start feeling better soon.
Regards,
Mick.

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear you have this diagnosis :( However, it may turn out to be a good thing, as it now means you should get the help and support you need to get your systems under better control and this will make you feel a whole lot better 🙂 Diabetes is a serious condition, but the good news is that it can be managed well. Because there are so many people with a diagnosis it means that there is lots of information and different medication regimes (if it turns out you need the support of medication, not everyone does) to help you get to grips with things 🙂 The trick is sorting the good information from the bad. I would highly recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter, which will give you a good overview of how to tackle things, plus I would also recommend getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker which has helped to guide many of our members through these early months.

I would also ask your nurse/GP if they will give you a blood glucose meter and a prescription for test strips so you can monitor the effect of food on your blood sugar levels at home. To understand what I mean by this, and how it can help, read Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S. The GP may say you don't need to test, but most people here would say it's essential, particularly in the beginning, because otherwise you will be just guessing whether the food choices you are making are ones your body tolerates well or not - unfortunately, whilst there are some basic principles involved, people can have very different tolerances for the same foods and therefore it's important to discover how you personally react. If they are really stubborn and won't prescribe (they think they are saving money) then it's really worth funding your own. The cheapest option we have come across is the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50 (High St brands can charge up to £30 for 50 test strips 😱).

Let us know how things go, and also if you have any further questions or concerns, and we will be very happy to help 🙂

Welcome to the forum Mick.

Hi Mick
I had high blood pressure along with the T2 diabetes and I'm now on medication to lower that. It depends on whether you're correctly diagnosed as a Type 1 or a Type 2 what medication regime you'll be put on.(you have not stated) But diet will be the main factor in bring down your blood glucose levels to within the 'normal ranges whether you are put on insulin or oral drugs such as Metformin. Please keep us informed as to the diagnosis type then we can advise you further.

Hi Mick. Welcome to the gang. You’ll also doubtless get the talk on statins and cholesterol levels. You may be given out of date advice, so let us know the numbers before you start exploring statin side effects. Also, what is the current weight situation? That may be the key to everything.

Hi Mick, I had high blood pressure for months, I went backwards and forwards to the doctors for different reasons , mentioning my high BP every time, the doctors were a waste of time and were not that concerned about it. I was showing well over 145 150 readings every morning. My diabetes was also showing high as well . I put on loads of weight , 3 stone in as many months and I did not know what the problem was , the doctors were useless. I found out I had Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and after reading about it on line , I am now fighting it. Regarding Blood Pressure, I have now got mine down to between 119/72 and 129/67 most of the time, I have done this by cutting out all salt from my diet , cutting out all sugar and fatty foods. I cut out most carbs . I guess different things work for different people and I hope this may help you .

Hi All,
Thanks for your replies, once i get more information on Monday I will post back.

MikeyB... yes weight is an issue, overweight, trying to watch the calories and it is coming off albeit slowly.., but I have a back problem ( had xray and waiting to see doc ) so exercise is a little difficult at the moment... but hopefully start making some progress on Monday..

Just hate feeling this bad...

Thanks,
Mick.

Hi, Mick, I will add my welcome.

Gretchen Becker's book was a huge support for husband and me for the first year. We were each diagnosed a month or so apart. The forum, the code free meter, and the book were our survival guides on a day to day basis. So I hope you find the forum helpful as well as diverse.

Err - why is everyone assuming it's T2? Let's not assume it is before Mick's had it confirmed please.

Help is here whichever Type it is - and there are no longer only 2 different types either Mick!

Welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum. Being dx (diagnosed) with diabetes can come as a shock but it’s not all doom and gloom ! Whatever type of diabetes you have it can be managed well ok. It’s very likely we are going to give you a big supprise on what we can eat, coz we sure don’t live on lettuce and cucumber.

Ask as many questions as you need to , we’ll do our best to help.

A little tip. Take a list of questions with you to your appointment, you might find it helpful if you can have someone with you as another pair of ears as they might hear something that you miss.
If their is anything you are unsure of ask us.

It’s very likely that many of your symptoms are caused by high glucose levels, once you start taking control of it and your body gets used to more normal glucose levels, you will start to feel better.

Thanks guys for the welcome... Monday can't come soon enough.
Its my birthday tomorrow so no wild party for me this year lolol.
