Hi Gary, welcome to the forum.

Well, if you can open your mouth and chew, for sure you can eat bacon, diabetic or not. It’s the butty that contains the carbs. Unless of course you are Jewish or Muslim, in which case you may not, but I guess that’s not why you asked🙂
 
Hi Gary, welcome to forum. There is a great book called Carbs and Calories, which shows nutritional advice and pictures of portions. Might be helpful. Like mike said, the bun has the carbohydrates, so would the brown sauce

Yes is the answer I eat it all the time. Carbs are the issue.
 
Yep, you can eat bacon. In fact, you can eat any meat, fish, eggs, butter, mushrooms & leafy green veg. Just watch out for bread, potatoes & other starch root veg, rice & pasta. And sweet things, of course.🙂
 
There is some research that suggests too much bacon (and other processed meats) may not be brilliant for you - but as with all dietary studies it’s very difficult to work out what it actually means in practical terms.

So I would say yes - but don’t go mad and base your whole diet on it, and don’t frazzle it to death when you have it.

It's all down to the nitrates used for curing, but the evidence is very shaky, not taking any other part of one's diet into consideration.

Yup. Dietary advice/research is often frustratingly vague I find.

I think there was something about searing/scorching too which was a bit gloomy for crispy bacon and barbecue lovers :(
 
My understanding is, as diabetics, it's not food that affects our BG. It's carbohydrates in particular (possibly beens and pulses too a bit). Meat and fat doesn't have an effect.
So we don't have to worry about bacon.
If you're seeing a dietician, they may not be happy over the fat and calories though, cause of weight management. (I had a problem with my diabetic dietician because I had bacon once!) That's a different issue though.

Fats and protein will affect you as well, as the turn in to glucose in your body. I was of the same opinion as you, and could never understand why my B/S were high in the morning when I avoided carbs. That lump of cheese was to blame, as was the boiled eggs. Although they do take a long time to affect the B/S, now I normally give an extended bolus over several hours (I'm on the pump)
 
I pour hot water from the kettle onto bacon, simmer it for a minute then sieve it out and cook as usual - it removes salt and preservatives.
As an ex type two I only look at carbs, and keep them to about 40 to 50 gm per day, and that keeps everything OK - though I do fine tune so as to have most of them in the evening.
