Flu 0r flu like symptoms and high bg. Help please

For the 6 days have felt unwell - very thirsty - high bg in 20s and once hit 30. Have not felt like eating at all but have managed a can of soup on 4 nights and 2 thin slices of Xmas cake. Horrified to find this morning that I have lost 8lb weight since Xmas eve. All I seem to be doing is calculating correction doses and yet still high. I know it is the infection causing this. Went to surgery today to see if I could see anyone for advice. Answer from nurse on phone was they need to have blood test done first. This usually takes a week before test can be done and then 10-14 days for result. Really anxious as at this rate I would have lost another 8lbs and got through 2 litres a day in the meantime. Went to pharmacy to seek advice and was recommended Floradix as my immune system needs boosting. Was also told to go straight back up to surgery and insist urgent blood test. Also that most important was for me to try and eat something - anything. Result test will be done tomorrow plus ketone check. Hopefully this nurse will be more forthcoming but can any of you lovely people give me any other advice. This is the first time since diagnosis and on insulin that I have had such a bad cough/cold/flu that has really knocked me out. Thank you in anticipation

Do you know about the sick day rules? I am sure they must be on this site somewhere! I’ve never had to use them but from what I recall, you inject a small dose every two hours while you have ketones, which sounds like an awful lot. Can anyone else supply a link?

Keep your fluids up, try those sick day rules (or adapt them to your own needs) and take it easy.
 
Up-date. Bloods taken and urine checked. Very dehydrated even though drinking for England and would you believe I have an infection - unspecified. Have to wait til Thursday next week for results and to see nurse. Very very helpful man (Andy) at Diabetes UK careline spent half an hour going over everything with me. Told me to urgently contact surgery for prescription for ketone strips. Also explained at what stage to take myself to A&E and what to say(This was refused when I phoned them as I need to see Dr and it is not on my repeats list !!!!) Went to Boots pharmacy and they sold me a drum of 50 strips for £5. For heavens sake this is less than the prescription cost - I know diabetics do not have to pay but a fiver to try and save my own life is really cheap. Checking every 3 hours and so far negligible reading thank goodness. BG now in low teens so still correcting but ketones under 1.5 means I no longer have to panic.
 
I always have the same thing when I change anything or need something that isn't still in my repeat scrip list - eg the replacement Hypokit I request every few years when the previous one expires - another one due to bite the dust soon. I just want it there for belt and braces - rather than only having normal hypo remedies to hand plus anything otherwise sweet in the house 'just in case'. This is exactly the same as Ketone strips - we only need em when we need em 'in an emergency' - and not being ruddy psychic - we can't predict emergencies!
 
I should imagine they'll be urine strips, they've always been around a fiver as far back as I can recall. However, your BG needs to be over 11.0 to spill into urine, if you have a normal renal threshold and I've therefore always wondered if it's the same with ketones, but don't actually know whether it is or not?

That is what I thought as I did not think blood ones would be that cheap.
 
Sorry didn't think to specify urine strips - also when looking at box they are only good for 6 months from opening so will need to order another box as soon as current situation fully resolved.
 
Yes - and ensure you have an in-date pot to hand hereafter, too!
