Wednesday 19th December 2007 at about this time I was being prepped for surgery. Distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. Spent a few days in ICU then in a room on my own, hooked up to all sorts, because of risk of infection. Christmas Day my family made the 120 mile round trip to see me. I didn’t feel too well ( understatement!). I don’t think I ate any Christmas dinner but my surgeon came to see me, resplendent in festive sweater. I had a few set backs and eventually was released because of good behaviour on 8th January. Had 5 months off work and then had phased return.
Now look at me 10 years on, still here and loving life on the whole, just need Mr Eggy sorted out! Yes I am an insulin dependent diabetic and take at least 20 tablets a day, mostly to stop me pooing through the eye of a needle but I am in rude health and considering I am spleenless, barely even get a cold! I know I am one of the lucky ones and I thank my lucky stars everyday. So a big cheer to Mr Byron Jaques and his fabulous team at The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
