hi all
Did my blood at 8.30 this evening it was 4.9 so I had two chocolates out of the Roses tub..just checked my blood and it has gone right up to 11.4..its getting me down its like I feel like I'm not aloud to have any nice things to eat.sorry for the moan needed to get it of my chest.
 
I believe frankly sugary ✻food✻ majorly contributed to my hyperglycæmia ..and I made a promise to myself I'd never consume the stuff again.

I’ve found the best way to fix a low is with the same thing every time - usually a GlucoTab or a jelly sweet. That way I don’t get any surprise highs. 😱 And if I want a treat, like some chocolates, I have them as part of a meal (ie covered with insulin). I KNOW it’s a pain, especially at this time of year, but the way I look at it is this: I CAN have a treat, but I have to stick to some basic rules - otherwise I’m going to be high and miserable.

You could always shove the Roses in a cupboard!🙄

I had insulin two hours before I eat the chocolate so I should of been covered..my blood has been up and down for the past two weeks..it doesn't normally get me down but last night it did...have a nice Christmas Bloden.
 
You said you had the chocolate because you were 4.9, if you had only injected for what you ate 2 hours before then they weren't covered at all, were they included in your injection? x

I had the chocolate because I had a good reading but didn't expect my blood to raise that high
 
But that is going to happen if you haven't covered them with insulin whether you have a good reading or not as your adding extra carbohydrate that you haven't injected for x
 
Chocolates like that are something like 8g of carb each - we've always been told that a snack of less than 10g you don't need insulin for but anything more than that you definitely do need insulin. So if you only had one you might just have got away with it, but 2 is 16g carbs and therefore needs to be injected for. You can have treats, as long as you inject for them, if you don't want to be doing umpteen injections per day then have them with your meals and just add them on to that injection. Boring I know, but sadly necessary :(
 
Rose's are little sugar bombs!

You can at least inject insulin to cover off the glucose.
 
I’ve worked out over the years that one jelly baby raises my BG by 0.7. So, if I’m 3.5 I know that three JBs will result in a score of 5.6 (approx). That way, I don’t overshoot, which is always the temptation. If I wake in the night with 3.5 I know I can gobble three JBs and go back to sleep without bothering to retest.

It’s not an exact science, but it works. If the Libre shows a down arrow, I might add in a extra JB or two, because that means insulin is still swimming around.

I’m with @Kaylz - I’d need to factor those delicious Roses carbs into a meal so that they’re well and truly covered with insulin. We can have treats, it’s just learning how to have them without ruining our control that takes a bit of effort.🙂

Let us know how you get on with the course, Lesley. Now that I’m going to be living in the UK again, I’m hoping I can get on a DAFNE course asap. Merry Christmas!😛

Hope you find the course helpful Lesley. Sometimes the ‘maths’ of diabetes spectacularly lets me down - so the theory might be 16g carbs raises BG by, say, 5mmol/L which would have put you at 10ish, there’s also the underlying direction of travel of BG and/or what was going on with your previous dose.

Some days I could have got away with a couple of roses without bolus, other days certainly not. So for me it’s partly the maths and also partly the general direction of travel that week, and whether or not I’m needing to tweak things like basal up or down or have been more or less active than normal... stress... alcohol... blah blah... as to whether I can rely on the maths, or should be expecting some surprises!
 
@Bloden I'm not a huge fan of roses myself although I do love the dark chocolate ones with the Brazil soft chewy caramel inside! Haha, I'm partial to green and blacks dark pralines at the moment and at 4.2g per praline it's not too bad lol x
 
Don't feel down about it, you will get there! It just takes time to get your head around what works and what doesn't. I know now if I've had a good day then I can have one chocolate, but for the first couple of months I was scared to go near them and it made me feel so bad. The more work you do on your diabetes care though and you'll get to know fairly quickly how your body will react. You can have good stuff, you just have to be a bit patient for a bit until you get there 🙂
 
My insulin requirements change throughout the day, I'm still a novice and trying to fathom things out, the carb counting course I done helped me a lot 🙂
Of course this time of year with all the naughty food about doesn't help. At work the desk was covered with chocolate and biscuit gifts, I weighed out what I fancied, studied the carb values and added it all up, injected the novorapid then stuffed my face lol! I didn't get a bad spike either 🙂
We'll get there, have a lovely Christmas 🙂

I have good days and bad days - as well as all the factors Mike mentions etc etc, it is also about how I am feeling that day. Sometimes the sheer tedium of it gets me down and I just eat the odd chocolate without calculating it's carb content, testing my blood sugar and bolusing. Sometimes I think it is ok to just think, bollards to it. It is ok to be annoyed, we can't all be perfect diabetics every day.
Tomorrow, however, is another day...
