This will be my third Christmas and I have to say I am really looking forward to it.
Same here, Jay..... I do the cooking & can control what goes in & what's left out.... My only issue is the low carb stuffing:(.

Our family are having Xmas dinner out on Xmas eve, then simple home made soup n crusty bread and bits and pieces on Xmas day so looking forward to a stress free day with people I love, and not a hurley burley hassle.

I'm glad this thread has been started since I'm in the same boat too. (OK not first Christmas since diagnosis but first Christmas since taking things seriously). It's not the main Christmas dinner which I'm thinking about - I should be ok just having less (or maybe just one) roast potato. It's more the snacking that's a potential issue, the constant conveyor belt of chocolates, nuts, etc.

I don't really want to eat 'bad' things though, and undo any good work from losing weight and getting bg levels under control these last few months.

When everyone is digging into festive snacks, don’t feel deprived. Snack on really dark 90% chocolate, nuts, olives and cheese.

I’ve already bought myself some excellent chive & pickled onion cheese from the Christmas fayre and some ‘gourmet’ hot chilli oatcakes to eat with them plus a box of miniature dark chocolate squares. I’ll also have a chocolate eclair which doesn’t usually do any ‘damage’ 😛

I'll be keeping some pickled onions and gherkins around - I can snack on those quite happily.

Mum's said she's making a prawn cocktail for us this Christmas which'll be really nice, and I won't have to worry.

I adore pickled eggs so will making sure I have some in along with a supply of dark chocolate I too do all the cooking so will feel more in control

Have to add this.. was shocked to see that inspite of feasting on cheese butter nuts even pork scratchings on occasion and have to be honest I do like fish so lots of salmon my HDL cholesterol was 3.1 and the DSN said I did not need statins as my ratios were so good even though my total cholesterol was 6.2. Would not have taken them anyway to be fair. But I must conclude from this that it is high carbs and not high fat that is the problem with cholesterol.?
That is great about your cholesterol. Perhaps you could send me your diet!! Mine is not high, or at least it was not when it was tested last year, but it would be nice to get it lower. Nuts and oily fish are good fat. There is a school of thought that fat does not affect cholesterol but it is controversial; some believe in it, some do not but your results are certainly speaking for themselves.

I had my first Christmas as pre-diabetic last year and was worried to death so came here for advice. I was not testing then (I am now). Instead of having everything over Christmas like Christmas pudding, trifle, cake, mince pies, I bought small mince pies and had one one day, then next day I had Christmas pud but only a small amount, next day trifle but a small amount and the next day cake but a small amount.

I suppose it is down to moderation and portion control but that goes for everyone really, diabetic or not. I was sent on a prevention course and am not pre-diabetic now although I must admit I followed more of the advice from members here than the course. I am testing myself now following advice from members and had some surprises like I cannot seem to eat bacon or sausage. I am continuing to be careful as I don't want to push them back up; they may go up anyway but at least I will have tried.

I went low carb last Christmas & made a fantastic low carb yule log. This year i'm telling D to take 2 days off as I am indulging in mince pies, stollen, Christmas pud & roast potatoes.:D

Funny feeling I might be be going down the same road. Christmas with my son and family and new year with my daughter and family, I know they would go out of their way to accommodate my needs but I’ve decided to spare them the diversion and will go with the flow for a few days. Some things I will avoid are rich deserts so I’m going to experiment with low carb, sugar free sherry trifle.

I was pre-diabetic last year so instead of having Christmas pudding, trifle, cake and mince pies over the Christmas period I just had a small portion of pud on one day, a small portion of trifle on another, a small mince pie another and a small portion of cake on another. I shall do the same this year and then after the immediate Christmas period probably not bother. As far as \I am aware it is fine to have some treats but just not too much and every day. I think that probably goes for everybody really, not just diabetics.
