Hi I'm New here and looking forward to getting to know people here 🙂

I've been getting monitored by my doctor and I've had two Hba1c results 53 & 57. One specialist nurse who is diabetic said I'm diabetic and I may need medication. The doctor said he's not overly worried but the nurse in the practice has ring fenced me and I have to see her for a double appointment to discuss options. What's people's thoughts please. I've noticed the last two nights two hours after tea my reading is 10 mol/m and takes ages to come down it was 8.2 this morning still but did come down to 5 in the afternoon. Thanks 🙂
Felix 🙂

Hi Felix,

Your HbA1c results are on the high side, indicating that you may be T2 Diabetic. The HbA1c tests measures your glyclated haemoglobin. As each of your red blood cell are created on a continuous basis, each one has an age. Glucose sticks to the cell when created and the pathology department can measure the level over a 3 month period. Therefore, the HbA1c result is an average over many weeks. Measuring your BS level in the evening is not ideal. During the evening/night, your body produces glucose to prevent you having a hypo (low BS), which can be dangerous. To get a better idea you should measure your BS just before each meal. Please keep your appointment with your diabetic nurse. They are experts in the subject and will guide you through the actions needed to bring your BS under control. Sorry about the technical language but the best way I could explain. Good luck!

Thank you I understand it 🙂
I waited and took my reading before breakfast this morning that is when it was 8.2 :/ just wish I could see the nurse sooner so I can get on with sorting it out as I have angina and I'm on blood pressure tabs so it worries me a bit :/
Felix 🙂

Hba1c of 41 is the highest 'normal' result - up to 47 is prediabetic and over that is considered diabetic - but if you are concerned about your results then you could lower your intake of carbs from sugar and the dense starchy foods which we are told are so healthy.
If you can cut out potatoes and grains or reduce them down considerably you could see your levels drop dramatically.
I did that a year ago and have not seen my doctor since.
The low carb diet has always been controversial, but it really works if you are still producing insulin and are type two, then you might be able to get a way without tablets, if you are lucky. It was published in various books over the years, starting about 1850 with William Banting, and there was Dr Atkins, the cardiologist - but what would he know eh?
You might be lucky and have a nurse who has seen similar results to mine, but there are some who still go for low fat dieting as the way to lose weight, and don't seem to give a fig for good glucose control.

Thanks Drummer 🙂
Yes I've done the low carb diet a number of times over the years and I never had a problem with my blood sugar. Trouble is I comfort ate when down. So very my weight has been up and down over the years maybe that's what caused this. My sister was the same and she's tablet controlled now.

Hi Felix welcome to the forum. Their is a genetic link with T2 Diabetes, as your sister has T2 it would seem you have inherited the genes for it.
Obviously being overweight doesn’t help, but it’s not the only reason for developing T2.
We have some good informative reading on here that you might want to look at.

Thanks Maggie, it's confirmed I'm type 2. The nurse was pleased I've lost 10 lbs and said to carry on and try to bring my level down to 48 in the next three months. If I don't manage she said I may need medication like my sister. I've accepted it now and know that it's upto me to keep it under control 🙂

Take Care
Felix 🙂

Welcome Felix 🙂

I went from 91 to 47 in 80 days - low carb foods are really effective in reducing Hba1c - last time I was tested - at 6 months I was down again and basically told not to bother them again until some time in 2018.......
