Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm not an excessive drinker - 2 glasses per week and my type 2 is diet controlled only as I'm only just over the diabetic line.

Last week I
had 1 glass of wine with a meal and half way through felt like I'd drunk a bottle. Fragile stomach and dehydrated and very tired. Drank masses of water and next few days the thought of alcohol made me ill! A week later & after 2 sips felt liked I'd drunk loads.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be....,,,

Do you take Metformin Sally? Sometimes people find they don’t mix well...

You couldn’t be pregnant could you?

No I take no medications just control with diet. And no definitely not pregnant.

Maybe just a stomach bug Sally. Be a shame if you were permanently off the odd drink though! 😱

I hope you're right. I've cut out so many pleasurable foods and the odd glass of wine was a treat! Fingers crossed it's a temporary thing! Thanks for replying🙂

I must admit I am the same. For the last few years I have gone off most alcohol, used to love a dry white wine, cannot tolerate it now. I drink Prosecco now when the occasion calls for it but maximum of three glasses or I feel really drunk. I can go weeks without a drink and it doesn’t bother me one bit whereas once over I would enjoy a glass or two of wine with my evening meal. Rather have a Diet Coke now! I’m a cheap date!

I had 3 sips of prosecco last night and that was all It took for me to feel ill though! Good you've cut down though as it's good for the health and wallet. Still I want just one glass though

Sorry to hear this SallyW. I have heard of people noticing different effect of alcohol at different times in their life - my Mum went through a phase of a couple of years where any at all gave a massive hangover, but is absolutely fine now.

May not be diabetes related at all?

Ah thank you Mike I've never had any experience of it before and was convinced it was something serious.....my last test showed liver function normal-borderline so hopefully it's nothing to worry about 🙂 it's reassured me no end 🙂

If worried and it continues, you could make a phone appointment with your GP to chat it through.

I'm unable to tolerate alcohol at all, Sally - nothing to do with diabetes or my liver though, I have a lot of food intolerances. Alcohol is one of my worst and I don't think I'd ever want to drink it again - but I have had other, milder, intolerances which have improved after I've avoided the relevant food for a while. The good thing about intolerances (as opposed to classic type 1 allergies) is that they can come and go, they're not always permanent. It does usually take a while for one to go away though, so it might be worth avoiding alcohol for a few months and then trying again.

You’re not on any non-diabetic medication are you Sally? There’s a list a yard long of things that can interact with alcohol.

You're right and I'm going to give it a miss - have a sip of my partners drink whilst at home rather than getting a glass whilst we're out. I am reassured to learn it's probably not diabetes related. My HBAic is brilliant and my liver test was normal-borderline whatever that means. I've also noticed I get very full after eating and feel like I've had a 5 course meal! I'll monitor it for a few weeks before doing anything thanks Juliet x

I think, has Mike has said, it would be worth talking to your doctor about this. It may well be a passing intolerance, but there are a few medical conditions which could account for symptoms. They are very unlikely, but worth eliminating.

Mike Do you think that is necessary? And do you have any knowledge of medical issues? My GP is quite dismissive & I only go if I think its likely to be big concern. Thanks for your reply

I don’t think it’s urgent unless you find in, say, 6 months time you are exactly the same, or if any other gastric symptoms persist. I don’t drink alcohol at all. You can still have fun sober🙂

(I used to be a doctor before I retired, so I do know a bit of stuff:D)

Ah I did wonder if you were but didn't like to ask. Actually my doctors are ringing to give my diabetes results so I will mention it.
I keep reading that a small amount of red wine is good so didn't really want to give it up as I'm only a moderate drinker. Plus pasta, pizza, risotto used to be my treats and I need some foodie treats Thanks Mike

Mike I spoke to my GP today & they thought it was nothing to worry about amd could be sulphites and to try something different to wine. She said it would be nothing medical to worry about. I’m now intrigued as to what your thoughts might be?

You probably know a lot more than us Dr Sally. Really good luck sorting what ever this can be 🙂
