I was wondering what some of your thoughts are on what causes anxiety in relation to our condition. For me there are a number of things that cause anxiety. Hypos as a T1 probably rates as one of the highest, in relation to hypos is the fear for me if I have to many hypos in one year, I think it is now more than 2 in a given year, there is a high risk of me losing my drivers lisence, I was wondering what are some of your fears that may lead to anxiety in relation to our condition?

I think in terms of driving and the DVLA rules the 2 hypos refer to hypos that require assistance to deal with e.g. a paramedic.

I try not to get too anxious about my diabetes and just do my best at managing it and que sera sera. The only thing that does slightly bother me is the thought of possible complications particularly my sight.

Same as Matt really. I try not to think about it.

I think along the same lines as Matt and Radders.

I also tend to look on the positive side, that as we have lots of checks and tests that anything would be caught in plenty of time, unlike years ago. Non diabetes dont get this as routine and can still get the complications we may get..so we're a step ahead. Just my upbeat spin on things. (Doesn't mean I don't have the odd anxious moment, that's only natural)🙂

None for me as only 4.5 when diagnosed so basically I know no different as this is the only life I have known.

As others have said though it's assisted hypos you need to be concerned about and hypo awareness.

My advice for what it's worth is not to worry about what might happen as it might not happen. 🙂

Oh my goodness as I grew up into my teens and 20's I had so many anxieties about diabetes, particularly with regard to hypos and eye problems....well I wished that I hadn't spent all of that time worrying because after 46 years of diabetes (obviously touching would) I have survived all hypos and have had no diabetes problems that have affected my sight. My only regret is that I spent too much time worrying.

Thank you for your reply. Goodness it does seem like you've had a rough time.

My biggest fear is going blind. I would have to kill myself. I couldn't stand it. I have claustrophobia, couldn't be stuck in the dark like that. I'm so frightened when my eye is blurry like this morning (I only use the one, the other lazy eye isn't affected which I find weird). There's loads of other things I'm worried about like heart, ticker, strokes, losing toes, but the eyes is the main thing. :( I have to 'blank' it most of the time otherwise I'd be perpetually scared.

Does your clinic use one of those questionnaires for measuring 'diabetes distress' @Rene Droomer?

Often just a handful of questions which you mark on a scale of 1-5 or whatever.

My clinic doesn't use them - but I have seen a few of them and they do help me clarify the way I think about living with T1.

I’ve got bigger things to worry about than diabetes. To be honest, I just regard it as a lifestyle, always have. I’ve never had any anxiety relating to diabetes.

I suppose I feel the same really Mike. I do have the sight worries however especially as my mum lost hers and my cataracts have no doubt been fuelled by the diabetes.
My worry is the D going completely haywire when I need chemo as a result of the high amount of steroids they’ll give me. But one carb free bite size problem at a time please :D
