A friend has just asked if you can take vitamin C tablets if you have diabetes.

Of course, but be aware of sugar content, particularly in soluble vit c tablets. They're water (not fat) soluble, so it's impossible to overdose as extra comes out in urine, and makes it acidic, which lessens chance of urinary tract infections.

He's been run down and his wife has been ill. He doesn't want to be in the same boat. He's diagnosed as pre-diabetic so is trying hard not to be diabetic.

I’m not convinced Vit C is the answer to his problems. If he thinks he’s deficient in vitamins, it would be best to ask for testing. That’s how I discovered I had a Vit D deficiency and I’m now on prescribed supplements that have helped me.
Picking out vitamins at random often is pointless and costly and they can have adverse interactions to other meds taken.

It is thought that vitamin C may help protect small blood vessels. A 1000mg pill once a day is unlikely to casue any of the doom and gloom of the Mayo clinic. You might like to check out this website: https://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-c/ which refers to all the scientific studies regarding Vitamin C.

Here’s the NHS guidance which is less alarmist than the Mayo Clinic

He should actually be able to get his vitamin C needs from a balanced diet but if it’s just to stave off a cold or reduce the duration of one, it’s unlikley to do any harm. Being ‘run down’ generally without an underlying cause needs a medical response however and a full metabolic panel and FBC carrying out.
