Well, there you go - you have just stated the reason why you SHOULD have the meter that works best for you. Diabetes is a difficult condition to deal with and anything that makes it less of a chore and produce better control should be of primary importance - in effect, they would only save a few pounds a year but potentially need to spend much more should (for example) you need an extra consultation to help with problems, or - heaven forfend! - a hospital admission. Sounds dramatic, but every little step that undermines your ability to manage your diabetes well increases the risks of placing a much greater burden on the CCG's precious penny-pinching budget 😱 I would also apply the same argument to those CCGs who decide to replace needles with cheaper types - if the cheaper ones increase the risk of scar tissue and lipohypertrophy over time then they will make control far more difficult.
Thanks and very moved by your words, so true and will keep this in mind when I see my DSN next week. My goal is to have a meter which helps me and whilst open to the one they suggest, I am also prepared to keep my current one if that is the best solution. :D

The strips are absolutely exactly identical ! That's why it's handy having a Nano as the spare to a more sophisticated Accu-Chek meter - you already have the strips and obviously the finger bodger which is now the same one too so takes the same cartridges of lancets (6 to a cartridge) so it's far less of a panic should the 'Smart' meter that does the extra things decide to malfunction.

They are not sold as 'Nano' or 'Expert' strips - only as Accu-Chek Aviva test strips.

Ok that makes sense as I was looking at their web site and couldn't find price for test strips for the Expert. So I will be given the free Nano one and then buy the Expert, that could work. Does the Smart one often malfunction?

Do you have a DSN? They may be able to give you an Expert, or, alternatively, it might be worth calling Accuchek customer care and blagging one - you could tell them you have been using the Contour but would like to use the Expert and your doctor has agreed to prescribe the strips for it but can't prescribe the meter - worth a try. I've never paid for a meter, and Accuchek sent me a Nano and a Mobile unsolicited because I have been using an Aviva 🙂

I am seeing my DSN on Friday so will try speaking with her and will ring the Accuchek customer care too. Still sad at losing my meter but will give this a go!
