Side affects of metformin

I have been told that metformin messes up your kidneys is this true and what side affects do you guys get from metformin?

I am just wondering this question as I have stopped taking it a few months ago and I am still very stable with my blood glucose levels.

One of the reasons I stopped it was to do with worrying about long term affect. I do not like taking any drugs if I don't feel I need them.

I don't take them, but as far as I'm aware they are one of the safer medications to take, as they have been about for decades - 60 years, in fact! 😱 🙂

There was an article in one of the papers recently that I meant to show here but I forgot....🙄. Anyway, it said that Metformin was becoming a trendy pill to take by non-D people in order to lose weight! Good luck with that, thought I.

I don't know where muggles would get Metformin, presumably from the internet 😱

Don’t worry about it. I know it’s much easier to ask the questions you need to and get a personal response, rather than hunt around the forum possibly for ages.
Speaking personally I don’t care how many times I answer the same or similar questions and I am absolutely positive I’ve asked the same questions as many others have.

Good for you for creating this thread Ally ~ Metformin ~ or Metfartin as it's known on here (for its laxative effects😱) is used by several forum members but for those who found the side effects intolerable, their GP switched them to say Sukkarto SR which is a slow release form of Metformin.

Hi @Liz fradley , Welcome. I don’t know if you are aware , their is a slow release version of Metfartin 😉 that some people find is much easier on the tum.

I can tolerate 500 (mg?) three times a day but no more than that. Any more, even the slow release, causes an upset stomach. I have been on that dose must be for about 30 years now and provided I take it with food there has been no problem other than the first couple of weeks of taking it.

I am on slow release once a day, but for several years my stomach and bowels have been a nightmare. Docs suggested IBS but to me it is the diabetic medication, after colonoscopy and everything was normal.

You’ve suffered for a couple of years , ouch.
Diet and exersize alone does work for some people, I hope it does for you. Are you able to test your BG (blood glucose) to see how the various carbohydrates affect you.
