Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I've had type 1 diabetes for more than half my life now (21 years). I decided to join this forum to see if I can find out the latest available info about diabetes. I must admit I've let things slide lately, so I'm hoping to get back on track & maybe this forum will give me the incentive I need.

Welcome to the forum and great you are here to make changes. How are you doing? Do you have specific goals? Everyone here is very friendly and knowledgable and sure you will receive loads of support and help.

Hi Greys and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I'm sure you will get back on track. As for diabetes well the cure is still 10 years away 😉 but there is a fair bit of newish technology. Do you use or have you heard of the Libre flash glucose monitor? What insulin do you use?

Thanks. I would like to decrease my HbAc1, as it has crept up to 7.8, which it not great.

Hi Matt. No I haven't. I'll have a Google. I use Humalog & Insulatard. 10 years! Can't even imagine not having it tbh.

Oh yes, I have actually, but too expensive. I hear it costs £200 a month.

It's a running joke really. Whenever news of research about a possible 'cure' comes out it's always 10 years away.

The starter pack is around £140 (reader and 2 sensors). After that you just need the sensors and if you used it all the time it would be about 2 sensors a month (each sensor lasts 14 days) and they cost £48 each. Yes, it's expensive but a lot of people, including me, just buy sensors on an occasional basis. I probably use one every couple of months. For me it's not perfect but it can prove very useful

You could also try your DSN for a freebie as Abbott have been trialling them with some clinics.

Evening, good to hear you're looking to tighten things up, but I'd have to say we're not all knowledgable! Well I'm not I've been winging it for 9years but this place is pretty handy!

Hello and welcome to forum

Hi . Welcome

Welcome to the forum, Greys. Like others, the concept of Libre flash monitoring appeals to me, but I feel it's too expensive for me at present.
Have you ever been offered a diabetes education course such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating)? If not, it would be worth asking your diabetes team next time you see them. If you don't have a diabetes team, then ask your GP to refer you.

It's half that! Welcome Greys I find this forum very helpful. So much experience to share. How does the insulatard work for you?
You can get a starter pack on a special offer of the Freestyle which would give you a lot of useful info for a month, then you could stop once you knew what was going on with your levels, that was my plan initially but I find it so useful that I have continued it.

Hi, yes I agree. Too expensive for me I too unfortunately. Yes I went on a DAFNE course a few years ago. A real eye opener, learnt such a lot about the condition. It totally changed the way I took my insulin. Previously I was eating according to the insulin I took, now it's the reverse & i can even eat carb free meals. I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the info Radders. I'll make enquiries into the special offer. I have been using Insulatard for many years now & find it works for me. I have to adjust it frequently though depending on how much excercise I do in a week

Hello and welcome Greys, glad you found us 🙂

This forum has helped me so much to keep going when I feel like screaming at my pump and my non compliant blood sugar! There is a wealth of experience on here and I hope it can help you get back on track. 🙂

Adjusting insulatard sounds interesting, do you reduce it in advance of the exercise or after? I never managed to get good levels with the long acting insulins, which is why I got my pump.
