Hi @Tinymartin Welcome .
Feel free to ask questions we'll do our best to help.
Have you been diagnosed long.

Hi @Tinymartin a warm welcome yup you will properly get better advice from us then anyone seen as we all have it in common x

Thanks for the warm welcome. Diagnosed T2 last month and put on Metformin and diet. Lost some weight already but still have a long way to go. Bought one of those BG test machines and I was 109 in the morning and in the evening after having an apple and 2 tangerines it was 276 and 350????? Is this normal? Tried again this morning and got a reading of 106 and 2 hours after lunch it was 83. What going on? Is this a good place on here which helps with food choices for both diet and diabetes?

The meter is giving your test results in mg/dL rather than the measurements we use in the UK - mmol/L.

If we divide those numbers by 18, we'll get the UK numbers.

So 109 = 6.06 - so that's fine. After all that fruit in the evening - the 276 = 15.3 and the 305 = 17.0 - both of which are not OK.

The idea is you test before you eat, and again a couple of hours after - and you are aiming for an increase of no more than 3.0. If you didn't test before, you've no idea how much either actually increased your BG by, have you? - if it was 12.5 beforehand, the 15.3 after is only an increase of 2.8, so the apple was fine - it's the 12.5 before eating you need to tackle.

See what I mean?

If you go into 'Settings' on the meter, it should give you the option of changing it to measure mmol/L - and then you'll be able to see much easier what's what. If it doesn't give you the option then you'll just have to use either mental arithmetic or a calculator to convert it!

Hello to Martin.

Thanks for that it's a big help. Hopefully I will not have too many questions about this as time goes on. Now off to the gym pray for me. Lol

Hello and welcome to the forum Tinymartin. 🙂

How did your BG do, before and after the gym session?

Both times were in range about 6. Happy with that. So far I've had one time it spiked so I'm trying to identify why and then deal with it. I keep hitting a average of 6. How are you doing?

Good numbers Martin...within the range you need to be aiming for...once you test regularly before & after food...whatever 'spikes' your BG should be clearly identified.

Hey - excellent!

There could be all sorts of reasons Martin - what had you eaten that day or the previous one, what activity, had you had any stress, what was the weather doing .......

You'd have to tell us a lot more about everything leading up to it - for anyone (medically qualified or not LOL) to hazard a guess !

Does it spike 2 hours after you eat or does it take time to go through system? I got those high readings in a one off because I've eaten and done the same things for the last month now and that's the only time it's spiked. I'm hoping is the machine having a bad day. Lol. When I was diagnosed it was with a works health van that comes in once a year. Last year I was just under 8. Now I've done one test in this van and I'm a diabetic after a result of 14.9. I've got to do a blood test in two weeks so I'm hoping it will be good news.
