Sorry I'm still rather thick when it comes to this kinda thing, I was wondering what difference it makes between porridge and oats in granola, I don't cope too well with a bowl of porridge but can easily eat a bowl of granola any help much appreciated thanks 🙂 x

I think the oats in granola tend to quite thick cut and chewy, whereas a lot of porridge oats are more refined, ( so you don't have to cook them for hours or overnight as used to be the case with porridge oats) so the starch is released and converted to glucose more easily.

Thanks for that Robin 🙂 x

I'm still gutted that we can't have porridge. My diabetic relatives have it every morning, just don't bother measuring. I usually have it every morning in Blackpool, can't believe I won't be able to have it this year before my full English followed by toasts and marmalade. :(

What do you mean cant have it? Have you actually ever tried having it and testing to see what effect it has on you? Many of the members CAN tolerate porridge x

It's got a lot of carbs in it, I'm not supposed to have it on Atkins until almost the top rung of the carb ladder. When I mentioned to my Atkins friends that I looked forward to taking porridge 'back' they were quite shocked and advised against it. They're not even diabetic, just trying to lose weight.

(1/2 cup) of cooked steel-cut oats has 150 calories, 5 g protein, 27 g carbs, 2 g fat and 4 g fiber. One serving (1 cup) of cooked rolled oats has an extra gram of fat. One packet of plain instant oats has 100 calories, 4 g protein, 19 g carbs, 2 g fat and 3 g fiber.

I will have porridge for breakfast tomorrow and measure. How much porridge should I weigh out for one person and how much water? It's ages since I made it!

I have porridge most days for breakfast and find that I don't get a huge spike from it. It was one f the cereals that I was advised to have after diagnosis by the nurse at my surgery.

It depends what kind of oats you are using it should tell you on the back of the pack but its generally 40g of porridge as for amount of water it really depends on what consistency you prefer, Scotts porridge oats say 275ml, sorry I don't work in cup measurements but 40g scotts oats has 24g carbs, so much less than the white bread you've been eating x

Gonna give it a whirl tomorrow morning. 🙂

I find porridge gives me a spike that I can't manage with insulin. It helps if I mix it with flax seed and it would probably be ok if I ate a half portion but then I would be hungry!

You could try Flahavan’s oats. They tend to be a bit more expensive but I find they last longer because they are thicker and I only usually use about 20-25g (with greek yoghurt, few berries & cinnamon made the night before). I haven't had Granola in a while but I had trouble finding a brand without a high sugar content.

Trouble was I tried it once and 1,2 and 3 hour readings were good however the 4 hour test wasn't so it just didn't work for me, I used the Dorset Cereals honey granola, I don't pay attention to the sugar really just the total carb and a 45g serving of it has 21g carbs so I used to have that with Skyr honey yoghurt x

I find that Lizi's granola works for me. I think the difference between it and porridge might be a higher fat content, fat is really the only thing that seems to work for me in slowing down carb release.

I see. I think I'll look at it again, I lack a variety at breakfast. Thanks for the suggestions Kaylz & Radders.

Apologies for veering off topic.

It's no problem at all, if you mention something in someone else's thread you generally get a response about it and sometimes saves time rather than having to create a separate thread so please dont apologise 🙂 x

I did the experiment. Interesting. Will post results in the 'what did you eat yesterday' thread tomorrow. 🙂 I will definitely be having porridge once I get to goal weight (from my lips to God's ears, I need to get to goal asap).
