Hello to all.

Will try and trim this,,, 1 am last Frid called emergency dental line ( 111 by another name), 09-00 they callled me back with appt at 18-30 that day= 17.5hrs.
At 18-30 dentist says not tooth probl, Gum problem related to Diabetes, advises me to register with a dentist.
Getting a dentist is not possible, tried Five, same thing, fill in form, when patient drops off list we will call you.
So, stuck it as long as possible until today. 08-00 phone GP, saw him at 09-30, not in least bit interested. Advises ring 111.
Looked on Internet, phoned Charles Clifford Dental Hospital,, got Appt at 11-30.
First dentist looks, takes X-rays and states 2 teeth need removing. Due to be extracted at 13-30.
13-30 Consultant looks, says he will not do it due to high blood sugars and potential liver
problems which show on my records.
Given strong pain killers, Xrayed again.
That's a week of constant pain, not sure I can carry on.
Consultant is writing to surgeon and my GP.
Don't know what I'm meant to do next.

Simple solution is go to your GP and ask for insulin to help get your numbers down.

No it is not.

The Consultant Dentist based his decision on the BG levels when the GP did my bloods on May 16th,, which was very high 16.3
Currently they are half that.

I was hoping that maybe others in the forum had encountered the same sort of thing.

Whilst all this is going on, there will be a delay while correspondence is exchanged, I have the pain.

Cant believe this is happening, can't think of another angle to approach it from.

I get the feeling that if I was an obese person who has never exercised ( last 2 days my combined steps exceeds 30 000) and wanted to eat loads of Carbs the GP and nurse would be more helpful.

What sort of levels are we talking Bill? What meds are you currently taking?

Currently taking 4X500g Metformin, Four Creon capsules 25000,
Lanzoprazole 30mg with food, Bisoprolol plus lots of pain killers, I have Morphine solution for emergencies.

I was due life threatening surgery which is on hold until the D is under control.

Current 14day average 8.5

I'm baffled as to all this fuss over your levels and having teeth out Bill but I've no experience of this and my dentist never considers diabetes as an issue when she treats me. Having said that she does freak a bit about the leukaemia though!
Would you be having them out under local? Are there other serious issues that make anaesthetic an issue for you? Nothing worse than severe tooth pain but it sounds like the gums are implicated too. Are they trying to get those under control with antibiotics?

Your averages are not that bad!!

Couldn't they refer you to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon? That where my dentist referred me in relation to other health issues which could impact on my jaw.

I can guarantee coming a big fat lump of an obese person that I am that's not the case and talking of steps on my s health record I have done 20,000 today and yesterday

Bill, there really is no need for those comments and many on the forum would find them highly offensive.
I realise you are extremely frustrated and resentful that you have diabetes but hurling insulting remarks like that is not helpful. You just have to man up accept you have diabetes and look after yourself.

Hang on, no way am I being personal or trying to get at anyone.

Point is, if I fitted into their "one size fits all" template, a point Ive been making since day one, then I believe both the nurse and GP would likely take a different view. That template IS based around obese people who eat lots of carbs and don't exercise, this I know because that's all they talk to me about.

What am I supposed to do, say it isn't ??

If you think it's insulting take it up with them

Hadn't realised I was "hurling remarks" as it is, I will do my best to

" man up" obviously there was no insult intended in that remark.

Not been offered ABs,,

Yes local was intended, as far as I'm aware there are no factors ruling out any sort of anaesthetic.

It's very puzzling,,,, just keeps going round in circles.

You know what

Have a nice day.

So sorry to hear this, how frustating and painful too. I am sorry I can't offer any help but hope you get the help you urgently need as soon as possible. I know you are working hard to get your levels down, being in that much pain can affect blood sugars too. I hope tomorrow is a better day.

I'm surprised that dentist at dental hospital didn't give you a prescription for antibiotics or painkillers, but it might be a clinical decision not to, or it might be local policy for GP to issue prescription instead.
As you say dentist said they would write to your GP, if seems wise to go to your GP and find out what was written - it might include instructions about what to prescrive for you. If GP can't help, then see pharmacist for advice about over the counter items eg mouth wash, painkillers.
In addition, making your own mouth wash with hot salty water might help. Swill round mouth and spit out. Don't swallow. This can be effective in relieving gum pain and treating infection. This was the advice given to me by friend who was a student dental nurse, when I asked her advice when I had some pain / discomfort with a erupting wisdom tooth, some 10 years before I got type 1 diabetes, andI haven't had any gum problems since diagnosis.
I'm assuming that you haven't been able to register with an NHS dentist? If there are no NHS dentists with spaces, you might have to consider a private practice. In fact, a dental hygienist might be able to help, and that's usually private anyway, but reasonable costs.
I hope you make some progress today before weekend starts. @Bill Stewardson

Dental hygenist around here charge about £ 50 for a half hour appointment.

Hi Bill, I'm very sorry to hear about your predicament and your frustration is perfectly understandable - I experienced a similar situation a couple of years ago when I was in a desperate situation, being passed from pillar to post and sent round in circles with no-one seeming to want to help me :( The stress and pain are likely to be contributing to your higher levels - one of the especially cruel additional difficulties of diabetes :( I don't know the ins and outs of dentistry, so can't comment on the decisions not to go ahead because of your levels, other than the fact that high levels can encourage bacteria and consequent infection, and this can be especially dangerous when surgery is performed. I hope that you are able to get some relief from the pain and that your levels improve so that things can go ahead very soon.

So, the situation so far- hopefully this can be added to any general knowledge
and therefore be of assistance to others- I have now been referred to Oral Surgery at the dental hospital on JULY 13th, I still have the problem teeth.
The consultant who turned me away last time stated " my numbers are too high" my Codefree goes against this (14 day avg 7.6). He bases his decision on the numbers recorded at the NGH on May 16th which were 16.3
He also said he would write to my gp- the one who told me ring 111.
I have been given pain killers which help at times.
This mess is directly related to being D.
Next week I see the D nurse, and I will be told I am wrong re carbs, I will be told about portion control and I will be told about exercise,
Maybe I should "man up" eh ??
On a different note, Ive had enough of this "one size fits all" c**p, they know nothing but the earlier mentioned "lazy obese carb eating" stuff that offends me and is hampering my health. To that end I have sent messages to various leading people in the field, and I will continue to do so- if they listen to me, convince me otherwise I will shut up.
Until then I will not.

It's always just the diabetes, Bill. There's many a gravestone engraved with "they thought it was just the diabetes". Just keep ploughing on, you'll get there in the end.

Next week I see the D nurse, and I will be told I am wrong re carbs, I will be told about portion control and I will be told about exercise,
Exercise is part of the plan obviously and I know you do plenty, yep portion control is great because it reduces your carb intake.

So don't take everything as a negative, look deeper into the advice you have and will be been given.
