Definitely off the menu for me so far,

White bread, steak, baked beans, onions, chips, spuds, pop, processed stuff,
Anything with sugar in it, cake etc,

Be breadband water without the bread soon.

Why is steak off the menu? x

Diet pop?

Because I spiked after having it, from 8.8 to 16.9

This being at half six.

What did you have with it? as steak is zero carb so that alone should not have had much on an effect if any on your levels x

Did you retest? I find if I get a surprising number, sometimes it's because I've got something on my finger that has contaminated the strip. Might be worth trying steak again, just to see, it isn't something I'd expect to cause a spike.

Now I'm puzzled,

Onions fried in olive oil with frozen veg ,,,,,,,,

Like you I thought steak would be OK,,,I was 8.8 1st thing this morning.

I had a Cornish pasty at 1ish,, 22g carbs 16g fat.

Well fed up of all this now.

Sorry? so what were you before you had the steak? x

You'll get there, there's just a lot to learn! I would finger the Cornish pasty as the culprit. Things that have carb and fat in them can take a while to digest, and show up in the bloodstream, It could be the lunchtime pasty still raising your levels several hours later. Did you test before the steak? I'd only dismiss a food if I'd tested immediately before the meal, and then two hours or so afterwards, and it had raised my blood glucose levels by more than 3.

Sometimes a high carb meal like pastry, pizza etc. can cause a glucose 'hit' later just when you least expect it as Robin has said. I've found this to be true. I spiked badly after a steak, fried onions and salad meal and wondered why. I think it was the combination of what I'd had earlier and the fact that a lot of protein can indeed raise the BG levels. It's a complex subject seemingly but protein can be converted to glucose via a process in the body called gluconeogenesis. So whilst it's zero carb, it doesn't always have a zero impact.

Ah,, I only tested 1st thing, 8.8. Just retested 10.1,,,,,
Lowest Ive had since getting the meter , (Thurs) 8.8

Not sure what to buy in for the week,

I will get there,,,or starve.

Was it a tiny Cornish pasty Bill because a standard one would be at least double 22grams carb and a large one could be up to 74 grams!

Definitely best to test before a meal then 2 hours after to see what effect the food has on you, definitely think it was the pasty rather than your evening meal x

As a matter of interest, I've just tested after a Thai fish cake (21 grams carb) with prawns and salad and unbelievably have also gone up to 10.1. Unknown for me to go that high but the spaghetti bolognese from lunchtime was no doubt waiting to make its presence felt! It's not always just about the last thing we ate in my experience.

A fish cake of any nationality, isn't just fish. eg if you wanted an English one, I'd take some flaked cooked fish and some mashed spud, with some herbs and seasoning to taste, mix it up, form it into cakes, roll it in breadcrumbs and fry it. hence - there would be quite a few carbs in each one.

Personally - I haven't a clue what Thais put in theirs so couldn't make you a Thai one - hence I'd have to purchase them - in which case, it should tell me on the packet how many grams of carb are in the beasties. There had to be something else in there, to keep it all stuck together!

I also have to tell you that fried onion has more carb than raw onion. You know how they go firstly transparent, and then start to brown? This change of colour is called 'caramelising'. What's caramel? - sugar! Yep - the natural sugars in the onions, turns into toffee! LOL

Normally of course we don't have a huge amount of onions with a steak - so it's OK. But say if you decided you may as well cook the whole onion rather than try and save half of it for another time - so may have had more than enough. I'd be tempted myself! - but - I'd pay for it.

Yes it had the content and carbs detailed on the fishcake Jenny. What I'd conveniently forgotten was the sweet chilli sauce I'd added which has a very high carb and sugar content! 🙄
Levels soon dropped however. Lesson learned. I know how to make fishcakes but these had lemongrass and Thai herbs in. Not to be a regular addition however.

LOL - at the sauce! Mango Chutney tends to have a similar effect funnily enough .......

Tea consisted of Pork Steak, mushroom and broccoli with Bergen bread, and eight oven chips.
Two hours later result 7.8 which I'm more than happy with.

Excellent!

Try having TWO veg (other than spuds) to the protein in your meal - and you won't miss the spuds. (I count mushrooms or a bit of onion or half a tomato etc with whatever meat, as garnish, not one of my '5 a day' allowance.)
