What do you mean by a good starting point hun? x

How many carbs a day ? X
Hi Dawny, unfortunately there isn't a one size fits all when it comes to carbs. You have to find what works for you. I personally have between 100-150g of carbs a day, as I know I can stick to that in the long term. Some people have more some have a lot less.

Unfortunately I cant tell you that, it's all down to the individual and what you can tolerate, so testing is the key but if I remember rightly you don't have a way to test at the moment and as I'm type 1 I'm slightly different as I can inject for the carbs I eat you don't have that advantage, I eat around 100g carbs per day but others eat less x

There's not set number of Carbs Dawny, you just have to find what works for you. The best way to find out what you can tolerate is by testing your BG before and then 2 hours after eating to see what effect those particular carbs have had on you.
For example many diabetics can't tolerate jacket potatoes, but I found they had a minimal effect on my BG, whilst porridge is a god send for some but a complete nightmare for me!
Have you been provided with a BG monitor? If not, many people on here use the CodeFree from amazon or homehealth, it seems to the the cheapest in regards to testing strips etc.
An average day for me, carbs wise is none for breakfast (I'm more insulin resistant to carbs in the morning so I don't bother) maybe 30g of carbs for lunch, and then around 50g for dinner and the odd apple or berries for snacks during the day.
This is a fairly low carb intake, but I have found over a log period of trial and error what works for me. So I'm afraid there's not set answer to your question, but changing your diet for 'better carbs' that is, lower GI type foods can only be good 🙂

Dawny perhaps I shouldn't say this...but...I never count the total numbers of carbs I have in one day...whatever I buy...I always check the carb content on the packaging...as @kay says in packaged foodstuff it will give you a list of the nutritional values...including the carb content...I try not to buy anything above 5gms of cards per 100gms weight...that doesn't work for everyone...diabetes whether type 1 or 2 is unpredictable...what suits me...may not suit you...I see you are a new member...just wondering how long since your diagnosis...are you newly diagnosed...what help you been given (if any)...has anyone explained testing your blood sugars...what foods you need to definitely avoid...initially it is confusing...sometimes downright scary...but...with the right support & advice you will get the hang of it...honestly...can you tell us a little bit more about yourself so we know how to 'tailor' any suggestions/advice we give you.
