i was diagnosed in hospital last week with DKA having never suffered with diabetes before this was a shock and I was very ill. I was diagnosed in 2012 with carcinoid cancer due to tumour on my pancreas with was removed only leaving a small tail end of pancreas the cancer spread to the liver but has been kept under control by injections for 4 years. But for the last four weeks I have had no strength or energy, drinking lots of water and passing water a lot. This developed and to cut a long story short I am now home after 6 days on insulin pump and drips etc. I am now on 2 different types of insulin, one I have to inject 3 times a day before food and 1 nightime. I have developed swollen ankles and blurry eyes and wonder if this is normal. My blood sugars on admission was 29.7 it is now 11.1 evenings and ranges from 6.2 to 7.8 in the mornings. I am concerned about the swollen ankles which have come on today.

Sorry this is such a long message but this is all totally new to me and my family.

Thanks
Pete

Welcome to the forum, Pete / Stamford. Hope you're feeling a bit better now you're home. Your insulin regime of 1 x long acting injection per day and 3 x short acting injections with meals is known as MDI (multiple daily injections) or basal bolus. It's pretty flexible, so you will learn to match insulin doses to what you want to eat and do. It takes a while to get used to the regime, but mistakes get less frequent with time. As you have lost other parts of your pancreas that produce other enzymes as well as insulin hormone, digesting some food types may be more difficult. So, do ask to see a dietician, as well as diabetes specialist nurse.

Hi and welcome. We are a very friendly bunch.

Sorry you've just been diagnosed. It is normal for type ones to be in a state of DKA when they are diagnosed so don't worry about that. Also, they'll slowly bring your sugars down for safety so your reading make sense.

I had swollen ankles for about a week after diagnosis I think. It seemed to be a long time.

Tagging @pottersusan, as she knows about life with not much pancreas left, plus pottery and crafts.

Hi Pete and welcome to forum

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is a great place for help and advice.

Hi, I lost about 80% of my pancreas this time last year due to necrosis of the pancreas and also became diabetic.

Do you also have to take creon?

I still get a lot of pancreatic pain when I eat the wrong type of food ( generally fatty foods)

I haven't had swallon ankles but did loose a lot of weight before discharge from hospital.

Hope you get use to your MDI and from the diabetic side of your issue's, it dose become easyer.

Cheers Mike.

Hello and welcome Peter.

You are amongst helpful people here.

Hi

I'm not qualified to diagnose your eye problem (or any medical issues) from your photo. I suggest you contact 111 (NHS non urgent enquiries) or your GP's out of hours phone number so they can ask questions and recommend where to go, allowing for the fact today is a Sunday before a Bank Holiday Monday.
Let us know how you get on.

No that's not a normal side effect. As others have suggested I would call 111 or out of hours.

Hello Stamford and welcome to this friendly forum where as you know, you will receive lots of help, advice and all the support you need. I'm sorry I personally can't advise you as I'm Type 2 and admit my knowledge of T1 & DKA is virtually nil - however I would suggest that you heed the advice that @Copepod has offered. I trust you are feeling better and also hope that the swelling of your eyes has reduced by now. Take care and please keep in touch as to your progress.

I hope you're taking Creon. It helps a lot with digestion. If not, ask your doctor about it.

I have no pancreas and eat what I like - there are some things I avoid 'cos of the consequences (I should have shares in toilet paper:D), some things I find physically difficult to eat (not sure why this is) and some things I try not to eat 'cos of diabetes.
It all makes life interesting🙄
