this is where I don't understand my diabetes. I had a perfect day. Literally in my
Libre it looked like a straight line. Spiked to 8.2 when I had lunch but I'm not that worried about that as that's really good, and it soon came back down. Dinner was also perfect.

Then, about 11pm, I was watching YouTube videos with my best friend, who's house I was staying at. Sugars started going up. I assumed it was the crisps I was eating (even though I already took insulin for it) so gave myself a bit more insulin.

Then woke up at 2am, sugars were 20. And still going up. I changed the canula, gave more insulin, went back to sleep. Just woke up now. It dipped a bit (the amount I gave in my sleepy stouper should have left me hypo) but was in 15 with an arrow pointing up.

How is it possible, when I've not eaten anything, I'm not stressed or melt downing, that this happens. It's like when I go above 10 any insulin I give myself decided not to work.

Also, why is it that when I go high, I go really high. It's like I can test one minute and all is good, and then within one hour my sugars have spiked. And when I say spiked, I mean like above 14.

Unfortunately sometimes that's diabetes for you, there are so many things which can affect blood sugars that you can't possibly account for them all! We sometimes get days when daughter won't go below 12 no matter how many corrections or cannula changes we do, then the next day everything returns to normal on its own and I've no idea why. Sometimes I put a +30% temp basal on for a few hours to get it down again, but then we carry on as normal afterwards without needing a permanent increase. Weird!

We've got hormones in the mix as well now though, which makes it even more unpredictable and means I spend an awful lot of time making pump adjustments only to have to change them back again a few days later 😡

As you know everyone is different so it could just be that you have massive insulin resistance from 10 upwards where as others find it starts at 13.
Crisps even though yummy are a real pain to deal with and I find that I can run high for hours after eating a pkt latest experiment is trying a temp basal.
I suspect the mad scientist hat and coat will have to go on whilst you work out the best way to deal with crisps 🙂

I didn't realise that about crisps. I eat them so rarely. We were sharing one of those bags. I eat popcorn normally (salted, and can carb count it perfectly).

It has a lot to do with the high fat content.
I'm fine with popcorn as well 🙂

Popcorn's very good for me too. Crisps? Not had them for a while but don't really miss them either.
I stick to popcorn and peanuts (and cold meat etc) for snacking now.

I had my first packet of crisps for months last night, I was a bit high before bed, (10) but decided not to correct as I still had working insulin, but I set the alarm to wake up when the insulin had finished and see what was going on... 16 🙄 gave a correction of 2iu, I'd normally give 3 for a BG this high, but I often dip low in the night so decided to be cautious... set the alarm for another 2 hours later... 5.5 😡 obviously insulin still in system so ate two jelly babies and woke up this morning at 7.4 with a headache.
So now I'm tired and grumpy today and decided to not eat crisps in the evening for a while.
Hope you're feeling ok today's amberzak, at least diabetes keeps us mentally young with all this mathematical gymnastics!

Right. No crisps for me in the future then. 🙂

At least mystery solved. I'm still high this morning but bringing them down slowly

Similar happened to me a few nights ago, was 7.7 when I went to bed and 20 when I woke 😱 no food had been consumed and taken my basal as per usual. They only thing I can think of is that I must've injected my basal into one of the lumps on my thighs, so it affected the insulin absorption.

I do have the horrid tutor today. Maybe I was feeling nervous about today's class. Ha ha

It's the pizza effect with crisps. So hard to eat 2 and then leave em! Best to leave the things in the shop at least - if not the factory where they made the damn things.

Found the reason. Even though I had changed my canula, the new canula had kinked. Was high all day but gone back to normal since I changed it again.

I worked in a crisp factory once, spraying the flavour on!!!
Definitely a good idea to leave them in the shop.

I worked at a cinema once. That's a sure fire way to put you off buying pick and mix sweets. Lol

On a more sensible note, I certainly need additional insulin once my levels rise above a level (That level will be different for each of us). I use an increase of +20% for bolus initially and then +50% for bolus if I reach my next level. I don't always remember to do this and then wonder why I am not dropping.

Another thing I do is deliver the correction (+%) by pen at first and then star to work out what is the problem. The correction is then already doing its stuff whilst I change cannula, tubing, ...

Other times as Sally said, BG simply does what it fancies determined to defy all logic!
