There's no simple answer to that question. It depends on what suits you - lifestyle, body weight, medication etc.
 
We are all different. Carbs affect us all in different ways. The only way to know what suits you is to test. If you don't have a monitor, the recommended one on here is the SD Codefree from Amazon or Home Health. This meter has the cheapest test strips. Test before food & 2 hours after. You are looking for no more than a rise of 3 mmols.
 
Can I ask what everyone means by "spike" please, also doc syas I am borderline diabetic but most mornings I get up I seem to be 5.5 - 6.5 anyone any ideas of how I could get this down a bit. I work to 22.30 come in and usually have not very much perhaps a glass red wine and maybe a few berries of some sort with couple of spoons of greek yoghurt. What length of time is actually classed as "fasting". Thanks in advance 🙄 ho hum am trying to understand this.

Fasting is first thing in the morning before food. A spike is a significant jump in your BG level caused by what you have eaten. I assume the term 'spike' relates to the sharp jump as it might appear on a linear graph. I'm quite new to this forum as well so I would appreciate correction it if my understanding is incorrect.
 
Thanks for the answer Browser. I am a bit disappointed as I am not really overweight anymore and have cut down as far as I can with carbs everyday. Have absolutely loads and loads of energy never feel sluggish and get up really easily so LOVE the low carb thing it has definitely made me feel better. I am about 10st and have levelled off at losing 1 stone with no problem on the LCHF. my hba1c started at 48 then tested 2 weeks later it was 43 (and I hope it is still falling but won't know until June when I get retested). Cant understand the morning readings, but I tested my partner one morning and his was 6.0 (his hba1c was 40) so maybe I shouldn't be worrying.
 
Spikes can be caused by the foods we eat, so say you did a pre meal test and then a post meal test 2 hours after finishing eating you are aiming for no more than a 2-3mmol rise at the 2 hour mark x
 
Your waking figures aren't bad at all, Jenni. They are basically the same as mine & my HbA1c is now 35. I am also the lowest weight I've been in 20 years. Still diabetic though, as that doesn't go away I'm afraid, but good control means very little chance of complications.

Thanks for that I was worrying what was I eating wrong etc etc but that's ok then as long as I keep to the low carbs it should get my HbA1c down.
