Strangely at 16% I still had no symptoms.
I wish they would choose a system and stick to it. One time I'm given my results as a % another time it's mmol/ mol
They are supposed to be using and have been supposed have doing so for quite a few years be using the eg 42.It is just that some professionals and others are using the conversion charts to quote.

They have to with me @grovesy - the new measurements are pretty meaningless to me still. I don't mean generally, I know I want it in the 40s rather than very far above that, but without converting the actual no back to a %age - I can't assess in a split second as they reel off the results, how bad or good it actually is.

I will be using the % expression till the day I die....:D...

My HbA1c was 16% at diagnosis, and I was still functioning, ( though feeling a bit like I was wading through treacle when I walked uphill).
One of the nurses did comment that she was surprised I was still upright!

If I AM 16% I don't have energy/stamina problems. I play golf 3 or 4 times a week, up and down hills.

Just took delivery of a monitor and got a reading of 9.4 so going in right direction after one week on Metformin 500 mg. and careful eating. Tomorrow I start on one pill in the morning and one at evening meal.

I'm still on old money ha! Apparently mine is 56 mean nothing to me. And the doctor didn't know in old money. First he said it was good then at my age (27) it should be better. I don't understand what he meant about my age though?

I think you're confusing different measurements there Browser. I don't think you can have a Hba1c as low as 16. See this chart. It was probably your BG level as Andy says and 16 is pretty high.

I've got my head round the chart figures now. I'm bit more comfortable with my reading today. I had one at 7.8 and having started on two Metformin 500 mg. from today onwards I'm hoping that a sensible diet and plenty of exercise will see it improve further.

Bring relatively newly diagnosed, I think I'm the opposite to most people on here when I say percentages mean nothing to me!! I prefer a number

I have no idea about the percentages either. It's like going into a shop & seeing the prices in pounds, shillings & pence. Amazingly, I still meet people who don't understand decimalisation.😱

It's 7.3% @PhoebeC - ideally, you want it below 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) - there's a converter here:

Do you understand his age comment? I don't know why it should be worse or better at a certain age. Surely it should be to do with how long I've had it of anything?
I know I have been better since then that was months ago when I was struggling. I told him I wasnt getting any support and he said "it's not my area" and shrugged!

I suspect what he means is that you are young and therefore likely to have it for many decades to come (except if we get that cure we were promised 'within 10 years' 🙄), so the better you can make it now, the better your chances to avoid complications 🙂 Don't like the way he dismissed your concerns and shrugged them off! :(

I know. I have no support at all. I keep trying with them honestly I do. When I had an appointment before Christmas when I was very unwell with my diabetes I was told that I know what I am doing and there's nothing else they could advise me. That high levels sometimes just happen. It's really not helpful at all when you don't feel like you can improve and they don't even seem to want to help :(

It's a very poor attitude, @PhoebeC :( I've known you for a while and know that you are pretty positive ans switched on about your diabetes, so they should recognise that when you ask for help, you really need it :( And what about those who are really lost with everything, how would such an attitude help them? :(

Sorry @Browser, I think we're drifting a bit off topic from your original post!

As a ps. to my above comment, I must say that yesterday after a game of golf and this morning, after a long walk with the grandkids, I felt uncommonly tired. My daughter reminded me that, since I've started to cut down on carbs, I've got less petrol in the tank and will tire more than previously. I suppose it's a case of getting a balance.

Your body will take a while to adapt to the changes, hopefully you will start to feel more energetic soon 🙂 Moderation in everything 🙂

I got tired very quickly when I first went low carb, but now I've got more energy than I ever had.

I was dx on my average blood glucose - HbA1c 47mmol. I wasn't given the % factor.

While reading threads on this website, I've seen that some folk refer to their HbA1c result in pretty high figures. When I had my HbA1c I think my result was 16 and my daughter said that that was pretty high. Are there two forms of expressing the result.?

Replying to my own post but just setting the record straight. I saw the nurse today and got the accurate results of my HBA1C. I was way off the mark. HBA1C was actually 67 and Glucose was 9.5 ( 3.9_6.1) I'm not sure what the figures in brackets refer to, but it turns out I was not nearly as high as I thought. I was encouraged to see my FBG at 6.5 this morning

Well, you lost me on the Glucose.
HbA1c. That'll be on the same scale as mine. I was 64 I believe. Some people on here have been around 100. And 48 is then "you're diabetic" point.
