Hello all

Was diagnosed a month ago (said Hello on the Newbie thread) just had my first Diabetic Clinic appointment today.. fairly pleased as Hba1c only 49 I am diet controlled only. I don't have much weight to lose as was 9 stone 9 at diagnosis have cut sugar and cakes a bit and trying not to go overboard on carbs and am now 9 stone 6. Diabetes nurse queried my cholesterol as it is 6.2 and she said THEY like it to be below 4 but I pointed out that my LDL was only 3 my hdl was high and my trigs were low and she agreed and said ok we will leave that for now. BP was up a bit but I walked there (one and a half miles) and I always get white coat syndrome when at docs surgery so took home readings in (all below 140/90) so have escaped BP meds for now.

She did say the lower number was a little high but it was under 90. I asked for a blood sugar monitor she said "No it would only worry you" she said I needed to go on a Diabetes Education course and have my eyes checked and I would hear in the post about that. I asked her to check my blood sugar and it was 7.5 just over two hours after eating which she said was good but that she could see I was Diabetic by it?

My fasting test a month ago was 6.7 but as the HBa1c was 49 and had been 47 previouslylast August and I was diabetic in three of my four pregnancies she said I was definitely Diabetic (was kind of hoping she would have said you are not Diabetic go home (ha ha in my dreams).

But on the whole am pleased I don't have to have meds yet and I don't have to go back for six months.

Did not get any other information than that! It that all normal??

That's sounds pretty good to me. Your Hb1ac blood test 49 is only just over the diabetic threshold.
Sadly most T2s are told similar or worse things about testing their own blood glucose (BG) . If you can afford to self fund the ongoing cost of the testing strips Many here buy thSD Codefree meter from Amazon or directly from Homehealth, their testing strips are around £8 for 50 , other brands are £15 - £25
We use the mmol/l measurement in the Uk and you're entitled to claim VAT relief

It's really the only way to find out how certain foods affect us as diabetes is very individual in its likes and dislikes.

Sounds like a good appointment to me. I have realised that unfortunately there is no cure for diabetes at the moment and all that we can do is try to keep it at bay. Well done for managing it with diet and exercise alone. 🙂 Long may it continue.

I'm afraid it is quite common to get little in the way of information, but fortunately you have us and we collectively have centuries of acquired wisdom should you need any help with anything 🙂

Well done for your research prior to the appointment, meaning you had an understanding of the numbers and were able to question some of the nurse's assertions. Has she ever considered that there are a large number of people who feel more anxious if they aren't able to measure their blood sugar levels at home, and have to rely on a 6 month test that might tell them they are not doing things right, but can't say where they are going wrong? 🙄

You are very much 'on the cusp' with your readings - hopefully, with your increased knowledge and efforts you will be comfortably well-controlled next time you see her 🙂
