Morning,

I have just done a test using Accu Chek and the reading was 7.9 is this ok I haven't had anything to eat yet.

Hi Leigh and a warm welcome to the forum.Personally on waking blood sugars I aim for 6.5 anything above I need to put my finger on why its higher.Did you sleep ok, are you stressing over anything and did you eat before bedtime ?

Hi and Welcome.
The number you mentioned is a bit high but not too bad 🙂.
If you've been up a while before you tested even when you've not had anything to eat or drink, it's very likely you're liver has been raising your blood glucose (BG) levels in preparation for the day ahead, This is perfectly normal.

At first the best times to test are directly before eating your meal then two hours afterwards.
Some of us test as soon as we wake up and go to bed .

Testing shows how well your body handles the various carbohydrates as we are all different, some can eat something with no problems where another has to avoid it like the plague.

Have a read of Test review and adjust by Alan S

Do have a browse of his blog, it's very informative.
I'm not sure if anyone has pointed you to the " useful links for people new to diabetes" thread but in case not, you will find the above info and more right at the top of the newbies say hello here forum .

Your result depends on so many factors. Are you recently diagnosed, how high were your levels when diagnosed. When I was first diagnosed 3 months ago I was ecstatic when I had a reading under 10. When I was first diagnosed I was told to aim for 10 or under by my Diabetic nurse as my first step but the advice I had from this forum was to aim towards the levels I mentioned below as those were the levels at which I would reduce my risk of complications.

When you have control of your diabetes you will be aiming for 4-6 on waking & before food and under 8.5 two hours after eating. These are ideals but you will get higher reading or unexpectedly lower readings from day to day. I can have a week of waking on low sixes even though I haven't eaten carbs/sugar etc but it's usually linked to me having a restless night.

Thanks for your responses I have a better idea now on results and eating I eat very little (lees then 100 per day) carbs. But got informed today I will have to pay for my testing strips / lances as I am on no meds even thought this is what my nurse wanted to try for 3 months and review which could lead to meds. Is there anywhere online I can buy these
