New to Forum - not diabetes or it growing complications - anyone medically retired

Hi been living with this condition for a while now and more complications in the last year and worried now at 55 now long can I continue to work. Have people had to medically retire and how did it happen - lots of confused emotions at the moment😉😛

Welcome to the forum, Shaz-Titch. Sorry to hear you're collecting complications. If you're in a trade union, that might be the best source of advice for employment issues, as it depends on your line of work, type of complications, age, sex, pension provision etc.
However, also make sure you're getting the best possible medical support to control your condition to maintain or improve your health.

Great HCP professional team and despite bad neuropathy and autonomioc neuropathy HbA1c is good under 8 last time. We have union and I am a member so can go to them. We also have an insurance for critical illness, that means it would pay 3/4 salary for 3 years. After 10 years of performing or exceeding got told that I did not perform last year and need a development plan. Acknowledged I didn't to take the 40 days for illness and appointment but no acknowledgement that would affect being able to meet my goals. Occ Health have also send I need adjustment to time for travel which I do a lot of re testing etc and getting scooter out of car with hoist. Nice to get your reply and not feel alone

So have Occ Health given you something to give your employer that spells this out? If they don't make 'reasonable adjustments' to help you at work, how are they meeting the law relating to disabilities?

I have used the helpline before they are good and I also have their advocacy pack

Yes they have an occupational report received by them in January but not yet discussed!

I was medically retired at 49, not for diabetes but for a rare condition that can cause gross anxiety.. Should you get a an occupational health pension like me you will find yourself excluded from a good many benefits. Maybe you are married and have the support of family which should give some relief.

I retired at 58 and had every intention of doing so at 60 anyway. I was ill though so claimed ESA (or whatever they call sickness benefit today) anyway, which paid my NI stamps till I was 60, when my state pension kicked in.

I retired at 55, but not through ill health though I did have 2 years off sick a good while ago with a different illness. On returning to work I did develop another illness in which my immediate manager was understanding and aware of the illness which I still have today. Most of the management who most people would not trust were not told about it, but covered my backside with the occupational health team. Some managers in the end had to be told, because in meetings I would fall asleep and they wondered what was going on.

In the end the effect of both illnesses meant I was not allowed to operate machinery or work in certain fields of work like IT.
