My first blood sugar on waking has been constantly high for several weeks. I've put my basal up 2 so far and no difference. However, I have other things going on, my temperature goes up over night & my hands swell up a lot. I was wondering if these things are affecting my blood sugar. My GP isn't sure about temperature but says swelling is raynauds. Any thoughts?

I've always found that high temperature (or whatever is behind the high temperature) and high blood sugars go hand in hand. My Raynaud's has never affected my diabetes. It might be the high bloods causing you to feel hot, or is something else causing your temperature?

Could you be going hypo in the night? I've recently had a period of hypoing in the night. But then I wake up higher than I'd like because of the rebound. Hypoing in the night makes me sweat a lot, and wake up with a headache. May be worth testing your BGs in the night to see what's happening?

Do you get swelling with your Raynaud's?

Have tested on a couple of nights but no hypo, just highs.

I have Raynauds and as far as I know it doesn't affect my blood sugars. My feet and fingers don't swell, but they often go white followed by a delightful shade of purple or blue. And it hurts

Do you feel well in yourself? What is your reading before bed?

A lot - whenever my hands get cold I know I'll pay for it when they warm up. There's a reason I have my wedding ring in a size that's too big for me!

My fingers only swell in HOT weather! I have Raynauds and they don't swell when they get cold. They become very painful and stiff. When they warm up they are still quite sore but they never swell.

However when I go on holiday to a hot country I cannot wear any rings and I have to buy sandals in a size bigger cos my feet and fingers will swell the entire trip!!

Thanks Ginny03 and Rosiecarmel. My GP thinks my hands swell overnight because they get hot, so I guess that could be right from what you have both said. I get the white, blue, red weirdness and the stinging, horrible sensations but was getting worried about the swelling. Have either of you been referred to rheumatology?

There can be so many causes of hands and fingers swelling overnight including arthritis which causes mine. Can be the result of certain medications including those for diabetes, high b/p meds, excessive salt, odema, kidney and heart problems, carpal tunnel syndrome etc. etc. Never heard of Raynauds causing it though.

I'm not sure I'd just accept 'because you're hot at night' as the explanation if you continued to be worried. I burn up at night but know the reason why.
Is your kidney function ok newbs?

I don't know about my kidneys tbh. Were ok at last check but that was a while ago. Seeing Diabetic Consultant next month so plan to ask her then and hope to get referral to rheumatology re Raynaud's as GP won't do this. An ANA blood test was positive for connective tissue disease but GP said this result is probably just because I have diabetes. I get a high temp overnight and hand swelling, all returns to normal within a few hours of waking.

Hope you find the answer newbs. It's certainly true that at high temperature, the body is less efficient at removing fluid from tissues hence swelling. Good luck.

Just to clarify, my hands don't swell in the cold either, but a transfer from cold to hot seems to make the swelling a lot worse than consistent hot weather does (and the pain at times is unbearable!) I've not been referred to Rheumatology, but was offered a drug to help with the symptoms a few years ago. I declined as I didn't really want to add to the list of things I'm already on, but I do bear it in mind for the future if I reach the stage where I really can't cope with it.
