So don't know what to do - on a Saturday I generally have an ham and chicken omelette from the chinese for tea at around 8:30 pm now on a Sunday I usually wake up pretty high the DSN says she thinks I'm taking too much insulin and hypoing during the night but I'm scared to take less as I'm scared of what result it will have on me - I don't know how they cook the omelette and it's quite large - myfitness pal has very different answers for omelettes and it's getting to the point where I'm thinking just stop it all together but that doesn't seem right as I still deserve a 'treat' right feeling so frustrated at the moment that bad last night that I just wanted to burst into tears and not knowing the reason why :( x

Kaylz the portions from these places are so huge, maybe you could just eat half? It might be that your body is turning all that protein into glucose - it certainly seems to work that way for me. The only way to know if you're going low in the night is to set an alarm and do a test. I'm sure you will work out a way round it!

That is a meal packed in protein, as Radders says the excess protein will be converted to glucose albeit at a rather slower rate than if you had eaten carbs hence, I suspect, the high morning reading.

Chinese food is notorious for added sugar. It would not surprise me that how one would make an ordinary omelette at home is not how they do it at a Chinese restaurant. They also put MSG with all their food and that increases blood glucose as well. The chicken may have been cooked in honey or sugar too.

I will try eating half and just taking insulin to cover the slice of bread I have with it, I've only tested once during the night at 3:30 am that was during the night last Saturday and it was sitting at either 7.8 or 7.9 and sitting at 10. something at 8 o'clock when I got up for breakfast, the reason she thinks I'm having a hypo is cause I'm also waking up every Sunday with a thumping headache, before I could drink a heap of alcohol and never have a hangover so if that headache is like a hangover I don't know why people drink that much haha, anyway my levels obviously sort themselves out with my NovoRapid throughout the day but Sunday's are the only day I feel like I don't have control x

No it is just regular cooked chicken breast I know that and I don't think there is sugar in it as it doesn't taste like there is and my taste buds now would definitely pick that up, it's more salty x

I don't want to give up on my Saturday night takeaway all together as since diagnosis I haven't done much at all, I'm scared about having a can of lager or going to the pub for a pint, I've missed out on so much things with my OH and it's really starting to show a strain between us I just feel like I'm bringing everyone's lives down , my grandad does my tea for me and I was at the hospital yesterday got home and my grandad was so upset and nearly crying apologising to me as he had to cook 2 burgers instead of the planned minute steaks as when he opened them they were off it really upset me as I've never seen my grandad like that before, sorry for all this just don't feel I can talk to my OH or my mum about these things x

Foo yung usually does have 'other' stuff in it. I'm not sure about MSG raising blood sugar (MSG gets blamed for a lot of things but there's little actual evidence for any of it), but a good foo yung will also have soy sauce and often either fish sauce or oyster sauce in it, which will contain small amounts of sugar.

As for your higher morning reading - you CAN fix this. I've previously posted a guide to identifying the cause of higher morning BGs and what you can do to prevent them. My gut feeling is you have a 'delayed dinner' issue but if you test according to what the guide recommends, you should be able to identify the issue.

You can do it. You will need to put in a little work for one or two nights but it will equip you to be able to enjoy yourself every weekend in the future. Stay strong - everyone here's got your back, and don't be afraid to grieve once in a while, it's completely normal.

Thanks you really cheered me up with the last part of that and thanks just had a read of it, I will try half the omelette this week and only inject to cover the carbs in the bread and will try and get up and test during the night although being up every hour to check them last night I may give it a miss this week as my alarm just woke everyone up every hour feel really bad for everyone else in the house :( x

Don't worry, you don't need to test every hour, but I'd definitely recommend testing just before eating, 2 hours after eating, when you go to bed, something at say, 2am, then maybe another at 5am, and then another when you get up in the morning. That should give you a pretty comprehensive idea of what your blood sugar does overnight.

I'd be tempted to have the whole omelette too - after all, that's what you're used to and what you want. My instinct is to always try to make my diabetes fit around what I want to do, rather than let it dictate my choices without fighting back first.

May sound silly, but how about a "Fakeaway" night with your OH? My girlfriend and I do this. Make your own Chinese/Indian/Kebabs - you can have the "naughty" things, but are completely in control of what goes into them!

Omelettes, in particular, are very easy to make, and to make them taste creamy and be filling with very little cost!

I'm really sorry to read your post, as it seems you are missing out on things and therefore you and those around you are affected. As Deus says, you really don't need to check every hour. His post on high b's in the morning is fantastic and should really help.
Can you not still go and do the things you enjoy, but, if you feel it is necessary, change it up a bit. Ifyou are not happy with a pint, why not have a glass of wine instead?
I still go out for meals, have take aways, go to the pub, occasionally drink too much and just make small adjustments that I feel happy with (for eg a glass of wine or a g&t instead of a pint works for me) or when eating out I might ask for the odd adjustment to a main course, for example, no potatoes, rice etc and then I'll have a pudding. I had a working celebratory lunch today. Had a salad without the bread and no dressing and had cake after that I cut in half. No deal and still had a great time.
How about starting with a drink out with your other half? Good luck

Well there was a better result this morning still not 100% happy with it, had half the omelette with a slice of bread and some mayo, took 3 units of NovoRapid then an hour later went to my bed after my 8 units of Tresiba, woke to 7.2 this morning but it's a big difference to the 10.8 I've woken up to the past 2 Sundays x

That's a good result, and gives hope that this is a problem that can be solved. How did you work out the 3 units?

My meter works it out for me but 2 was to cover the slice of bread and the other some of it was to keep me in range so it rounded it up to the 3 x

Just a wee update Saturday''s takeaway was a better success this week woke on 5.5 on Sunday 🙂 x

Good work Kaylz! Eggs play the devil with me, 2 eggs I can just about manage, more than that and I'm heading for a spike no matter what I do. I don't bolus for Protein at all because it never ends well for me so excellent work working it out.

Don't be scared of highs, you can sort them out, easier said than done I know because I was petrified of them having had such a difficult time with DKA and the delightful 12 months afterwards, but if I can do it anyone can 😉. Be brave and don't compromise everything because that way unhappiness lies. You can do it, that 5.5 proves it. Proud of you 🙂
