Hi James...welcome to the forum...I was diagnosed in mid July this year...with exactly the same BG (Blood Glucose) reading as you 17...I can imagine it was a 'bit if a blur' ...a perfectly natural reaction...and with the addition of depression and social phobia too doubly hard to take everything in...however you will get lots of help...support and advice here...without judgement or disapproval...are you on medication...or just diet & exercise?...do you plan to test...that's one way to manage your diabetes ...as for meals there is plenty of information on what to avoid and how to assess what is suitable for you to eat...I started at17...now down to 8.2 average for the last three months...things will and can improve...ask any questions you need to...I'm sure other members will be more than happy to help...or just listen...whatever you need...good luck.

Hi James, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( The good news is that now you have been diagnosed you can start working on getting things under control, and this will hopefully make you feel much better than you have been doing lately 🙂 Diabetes is a serious condition, but it can be managed well so that it doesn't have to lead to problems. Have you been given any medication for your diabetes?

Can I suggest getting hold of a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker? This should really help you to understand things better. There's quite a lot to take in to begin with, but you don't have to solve everything overnight, take your time and whenever you find something confusing or worrying, let us know and we will try and help 🙂

Hello and welcome from a fellow T2.
I'm sorry to hear about your difficulty's.
That reading of 17, is that from your meter.
Things can get a little confusing. For a start, there's the two number systems for BG levels. And two tests which measure different things.
HbA1c (blood taken from arm & sent off). This gives an average of BG over the last 3 months.
The meter you have is used for the other test.

Hi and welcome to forum

Welcome to the forum, James. It would be interesting to know what is on your diet sheet. Some are good & some are bad. Sadly, so many GP's are stuck in the past with diabetes.:(

Only getting time to reply now as I am a full time carear for my wife who unfortunately suffered a bad bleed on the brain 4 years ago , sorry if I don't reply to any posts promptly, but I will do my best to thank you individuality when I have free time .
Forgot to mension, Doctor had me on metformin originally 500 mg twice a day last Thursday and practice nurse increased dosage this morning to (1000 mg twice a day until my next appointment at end of the month . Thanks again so for now il wish you all good night and more inportantly good health .

Ah, my blood would not be happy with this diet..... Way too many carbs😱

I'll make the first stab at breakfast...

Many of us are quite insulin resistant at in the morning & therefore do not tolerate carbs at all well. Many opt for protein/fat only, for example eggs & perhaps as a treat bacon, omelets are another favorite option

As a rule of thumb, the more refined the carb is the worse it'll be for our BG hence the breakfast cereals are not good, some people find that porridge is OK (the real stuff not the instant). Fats help slow the adsorption of carbohydrates & therefore they will be released into the blood over time resulting in a lower spike in your BG

Hi and thanks for the warm welcome to group , I will obtain copy of type2 diabetes first year as soon as I possibly can .
Find all confusing as I'm scared to eat wrong food , getting different advice from people and don't know what to touch .
Sticking with Wholegrain bread , Chicken ,poached egg , fish and small portions of potato + fresh fruit until I see my practice nurse again at end of month , I also am on Avorvastatin 20 mg tabs ( 1at night ) .
Finding it hard to do recommend walking through day due to been full time carear so I walk round the house ( up and down stairs etc) , have a pleasant evening
Regards James

Ok. I will give you my own personal view on your diet. Cereal, no. Bread, no white, try heavily seeded bread, like Burgen, but limit portions (one slice instead of two). Potatoes, watch your intake of these. Personally, I avoid them completely. Rice, avoid white rice. Try wholemeal or basmati & keep portions down to about 2 tablespoons. Pasta, try letting it cool, then re-heat as this slows down the carbs. Personally, i avoid pasta. In a nutshell, carbs convert to glucose & increase blood sugar levels, some quicker than sugar does. Your nurse's idea of a diabetic diet (like most GP's) is outdated. I am lucky l have a diabetic nurse who agrees with what i am doing to control my blood sugar levels. With the right diet, things can be kept under good control & you will live a normal, healthy life.🙂 We are all different though, & this isn't a one size fits all condition. Get a meter & test what foods have an effect on your BS.

Ok, I should've read previous posts.🙄 Don't be scared what to eat. Nothing bad will happen to you overnight. This is a marathon, not a sprint.🙂 Take time to adjust & get your head around things.🙂

Hi James...if you could get a copy of the book ...that will tell you so much...and explain some of the pitfalls of trying to manage your diabetes...I found the whole diabetes 'thing' so confusing...no idea what to eat...drink...how to increase my activity...when I was diagnosed I was given medication (like you Metformin)...told to buy a book on carbs & calories...that was it...no real information at all...until I came on here...and read Gretchen Becker's book...it takes a while to find your feet...the conflicting information on what food is best...and what to avoid is difficult...however now you are on the forum...you can get advice from people who are going through the same experience...fighting the same battle...I'm sure they will be happy to share their experiences...I have made some real improvement in the four months since my diagnosis...but I still have a lot to learn...I test regularly it helps me see what effect the various foods have on my BG...sometimes it is just a case of trying different foods...testing...I still make the odd mistake...so take your time...as for exercise...nothing wrong with walking round the house...up and down the stairs...you seem determined...and that's what is important...keep it up...good luck.

Thankyou for your time to give this input.
I will get this book first time I am in town . I am sitting here sufferingfrom nicotine withdrawal as I smoked 30-40 cigarettes a day up until Friday , going to ask for assistance with this as my body is constantly craving them.
Really also confused that doc told me It would make no difference using skimmed milk which I changed two from full cream and also to take ordinary salt instead of the lo lo salt that I changed to while clearing out all junk food from refrigerator and cupboards .
I know I have alot to learn but hopefully in time I might be able to help someone out the way you kind people have helped me this last few day ,
James

Morning James.

If you can spend a week undertaking a food diary, measuring BS before, then 1 and 2 hours after each meal it is very insightful. Uses a lot of test strips though, the SD code free is the cheapest and excellent.

Do you need to lose weight? Some experts think that dropping visceral fat (the internal fat round the organs) can improve your diabetes by making everything work more effectively.

I was diagnosed 2 months ago, it's horrible to get your head round, but when you make positive steps to get your BS under control it will make you feel better about it all.

As for the cigarettes - well done - the first week is the toughest, then you will be fine. "The Easy Way" to quit smoking book is excellent.

James, welcome. Just a point about the cigarettes. I switched to vaping 5 years ago and its awesome! I could not have given up without it - its felt like I wasn't even giving anything up. If you do try vaping make sure you buy from a reputable shop.

Hi James...I think you'll find that some health care professionals do not always give the best advice when it comes to your diet...once you're 'settled in' you'll be able to swop ideas with the other members here...you'll soon find a balance...between what does and doesn't suit you...many including myself follow a low carbs high fat diet...its working for me...as for the book...can be ordered online...I got mine from Amazon...well done with the smoking...I haven't managed to stop yet...good idea to ask for help with that...very difficult to go 'Cold Turkey...' I have a Vap ready...plan to give it GO next week so wish me luck with that...overall you've made a good start...but don't push yourself too hard...build up steadily...have a good day.
