Had to cancel appointment at warfarin clinic last week... stuck at work...also due a blood test Hb1Ac...re booked for this morning...warfarin levels down...she questions whether taking meds...assure her I have not missed a dose...I get the look...about to be dismissed...I say am I having a blood test?...she says 'do you want one'...I said 'no not really but you and GP say I need one'...'oh right' says nursey...about to take blood...I point out my best vein...she ignores me and goes for the one I know won't give her anything...no luck...we'll try again...and again...she makes me want to scream...irritated beyond measure...same nurse who said not to test...really feel like telling her to 'FUDGE' off...tired of it...and HER...

feel free to rant if you want Bubbsie ...my mailbox is open. I used to hate Clot Club too ...it may be routine for them but it was all new to me and I didn't really understand. Last thing I needed was 'attitude' or comments from people at the hospital.

Taken you at you word Jonsi...rant on it's way...honestly she peed me off so much this morning...then same with the blood test...why don't they listen to us...

A rant does you good. Maybe if folk listened it would help.
on subject of warfarin, I know a 15 year old, given warfarin meter and test strips, training etc. Self tests, support by telephone, but children's services have said that when he goes to adult services he might not get a meter so will have to go for blood tests. To me, what's the point of encouraging people, especially youngsters to take responsibility for a life time necessity to keep them alive and well, only to take it away when they are adults who also have their human rights to be met , and should be allowed to be responsible for their own health needs with support. Guess that's my rant, and I know there will be a good going bun fight to follow. Hope this makes sense

I have read somewhere recently that self testing and managing Warfarin by patients who instruction, manage as well as the professional!

Can believe it. If the perso shows good compliance, is it better not to have to have someone take bloods, the perso take time off work, university whatever. That would possibly lead to non compliance and health problems. Daft I think.

Hi Carolg...I agree with you...senseless idiocy..I would be happy to self test...when the nurse told me my levels were low...she added 'right you'll probably have to have the injections too'...said I hated those...she barks at me...well without them you'll be at risk of a blood clot...as if I didn't know that...had them at the start when DVT diagnosed...luckily the doctor said no...seeing GP this month...going to suggest I self test...I can never get an early appointment...I am self employed...so the appointment times she gives me make it very difficult with my work...just tired of it...

Hi grovesy...never heard of self testing until last Thursday...when I filled my prescription the Pharmacist wanted to talk to me about all the meds I take...she told me about self testing...said she had no idea why I wasn't doing that...so when I see GP this month will be telling him I want to do self testing...will ask why I wasn't given that option...

Just getting fed up with them carolg...had difficulty when wanted to be discharged from hospital clinic to Surgery clinic...getting the first appointment with them was a nightmare...been like that all the way along...wish I had stayed with the hospital clinic...

There seems to quite a few "not so clever nurses in GPs surgeries" 🙂. My mate who is off all meds for his T2 is told all the wrong thing from nurse in his GPs 😳

Tired of it HOBIE...she also said I haven't had my levels right since she has seen me...had to point out my levels were fine while at the hospital...only had problems since been going to surgery...

Think it's down to cost

Think it's down to cost
Believe a lot of what we are 'allowed' to do is down to cost...however...as someone who is taking medication for diabetes I should be exempt from prescription charges...but haven't bothered...fund my own testing...meter and test strips ...buy pre-paid prescription...just can't be bothered with the process...happy to do that...just want to have some kind of routine...where my time is not completely taken up with clinic...hospital...GP's unless it's absolutely necessary...not too much to ask surely...

Here in Scotland we used to be issued with an exemption certificate when diagnosed with certain conditions e.g. I had one when I was diagnosed with under active thyroid, and you then got prescriptions free. Now all prescriptions are free (except I think private drugs) for but for glucose monitoring, only free in certain circumstances. I self fund monitoring as it's my choice and am not on meds that can increase risk of hypos.

As for the warfarin self test, the youngster I know tests on days directed or within his guidelines, text to dedicated number at lab, and gets a text back with instructions as to meds and next test. Can ask for advice if injury or ill health. Like everyone else, he completes his record book and gets strips etc from GP. Seems to work well even when he was abroad on holiday. Bing, bang, bosh

The article I read was citing this type of involvement in the research!

Did it say that this was an effective way to manage the issue?

They were comparing management and outcomes of self testing against traditional clinic based management! It found it was effective.
