I'm going for some blood tests tomorrow and I've noticed that the 'fasting' box isn't ticked. I think this mans that they won't be able to determine my HDL/LDL cholesterol split - only total cholesterol - or triglycerides. Should I be cheeky and tick the box so I get the tests? From what I've read over the months since diagnosis, knowing total cholesterol alone isn't much use (unless it's through the roof, of course!).

You might also want to guess my HbA1c - I will find it out a week tomorrow. Last time it was 5.2%, and the time before that 5.4%.

good luck I reckon 5.2again .......got mine today....I think it will be over 7 as I have been not so good.....BUT getting better, let you know later::confused:

I would tick the box, because I'm cheeky like that. And if it's information which would help you then I'd definitely tick it.

I guess 5.3, in the middle.

Mine is never fasting but they still seem to give me my cholesterol split and everything else?!

I'm going with 5.5%, only because my chosen number was taken 😉

I think the thing is supposed to be that the numbers can't be relied upon if it isn't fasting, so they can give numbers but they might not be accurate. I also read though, that there is on school of thought that thinks it doesn't need to be fasting!

Pressure's on again - all very low numbers being put forward! It'll probably be 8!😱

I might ask for a fasting test next time I go for my HbA1c. Was thinking of getting one done with the GP. You seem to get them done alot, my next one is arranged for september next year hehe.

I doubt it will be 8, don't worry :D

I was supposed to be having these tests back in June, which would have been 6 months between tests, but they moved my appointment to October. As it was my first anniversary I wanted to see how my HbA1c compared to last year and to make sure I was still on track, so I asked my GP for the tests. A bit cheeky, but she didn't mind! There are some extra tests this time, and I get to see the consultant (never seen the same consultant twice, and never actually seen the one who is based at the hospital!)🙂

im due mine in oct had last one in july , i see dsn on oct 26th but think i will book for hbA before that like.

I'd tick the box as long as you are going to be fasting of course !

I'm not guessing because you'll only make me feel inadequate whatever you get !

Ive got my bloods tomorrow too - results on Wednesday next week.

I think im going to remain in blissful ignorance of my A1c for as long as possible though!

Good luck with yours, although im sure you wont need it! 🙂

love the new avatar viki, what was your last hbA?

Thats my poor dog after a night out at chiquitos - she ended up wearing more fancy dress than us but i thought id tone the picture down so people dont think im mental!! (there a small yellow hat that goes with the frilly necklace! he he)

When i went on the pump it was 8.7, then 3 months later it was 7.8. we're now 5 months on but i dont think its gone too well so expecting to have gone up again :(

There we go - Inky in all her humiliated alcohol fuelled glory!! Poor thing :D

Personally I'd fast and tell them you have and therefore they can do a fasting test, the random test as you say is pretty useless, especially if there is any concern over your cholestoral levels...

Other than that, yep, tick the box, what can they do for a spoiled blood test sheet? 🙄

oh that's a good point, they ask you when the last time you ate was, so they'd probably tick the fasting box for you anyway!

To use my sister's favourite saying... "What's the worst that could happen?". You've got nothing to lose by ticking the box!

xx
