I've never suffered from hay fever before, but all of a sudden I am:(. My nose and eyes are streaming. What effect, if any does it have on your bg levels?

I suffer from perennial rhinitis, that is all year round hayfever it does not affect my Blood Sugars!

My hayfever has kicked in quite badly this year.

thank goodness for that. I can do without anything else complicating the diabetes!

Id have thoughwith it being damp and miserable today mine wouldnt be too bad....... but nope. My nasal spray isnt even doing the job today.

Fungal spores can be the culprit in wet summers.

I wonder what appeared yesterday, that is causing me problems.
I thought I had started suffering with hay fever last year (or was it the year before?) because I had some pretty horrible symptoms of it, despite never having suffered from it before. I got some antihistamine pills from Tesco and they seemed to relieve it. However, this year, despite the weather man telling me that pollen levels are high, I've had no problems! 🙄 Maybe it's certain types of pollen or something else in the atmosphere causing the reaction - an ill wind blowing in from Europe, perhaps? 😱 Didn't really affect my levels, as I recall.

Hope you get some relief from whatever it is very soon! 🙂

I thought that I was a fantastic lover then I found out my girlfriend had asthma 😛

Susan - the year Wills and Kate wed, Easter was it? - we were in Northern France - red hot and going to the beach every day. Miles of golden sand, with acres of dunes at the back. Glorious - been there shedloads of times before. Lovely.

Except - I couldn't breathe! I was so bunged up I can't describe it. My nose, but at the back of it, not the nostrils - my throat, my lungs. Could not shift it and I've suffered from it ever since. Cough, choke, gasp.

We think it's either tree pollen or grass pollen - the only thing that helps slightly is Beconase nasal spray which relieves the rhinitis slightly, enough to be able to sleep. I try not to use it too often though, only when it's bad - been and got some more prescribed this morning! (It's available over the counter in France, following cross examination by the pharmacist - in pidgin French, LOL Il est pas un rhume, il est à l'arrière de mon nez ........

Now taking anti histamine, Beconase nasal spray and eye drops!!! Got better for a couple of hours. I'm now streaming again - I look as though I've been crying for hours😱

I can feel a visit to the doc coming on! - at least he speaks English🙂

I was taken off Beconase by my ENT specialist about 20 years ago, I am on Mometasone not sure might be prescription only!

I used to take Beconase for my hay fever. ( I don't seem to get it these days, I think if you have it badly as a teenager/ in your twenties, you tend to grow out of it in your mid thirties, I certainly did, thank goodness)
I seem to remember it was very effective, but it took a few days to build up and work properly, so persevere and keep your fingers crossed!

It's supposed to de-sensitise the rear of your nasal cavity - but nowt's instant !

Well I have had rhinitis since my teens, despite having desensitizing injections back in the 70's, specific to my sensitivities.

I've had hayfever since I was a baby, never gone away except the year before I was diagnosed type 1, but I'm guessing my immune system was just too busy dismantling my beta cells to react to pollen 🙄

It helps to know what you're reacting too Pottersusan because not all antihistamines are created equal. This time of the year the main culprit is usually grass because people will insist on cutting it, but when it's wet it can also be fungal spores and the dreaded oilseed rape (the really pretty yellow fields). I'm allergic to tree pollen, blossom, fungal spores, grass the list goes on. Beconase is great outside of the summer months for me (I'm also allergic to dust and pet hair) but doesn't cut the mustard for the summer assault. Piriton nasal spray is very good, but I need optichrom eye drops as well with that and it doesn't help my skin rash (a new feature in the last few years). One a day antihistamines only really cut the mustard for those with mild allergy symptoms, I have acrivastine (which you can now buy over the counter) and that works wonderfully but I have to take three a day sometimes. I tend not to need the eye drops at all now until we hit August which is an improvement. I have also have a red nose machine (or red light allergy reliever) which works very well because it reduces the inflammation, although your nose does run like the clappers when you first start using it.

If the eyes are the main event it's most likely rapeseed or grass I was told, and that rings true for me, my eyes don't run so much as balloon until I can't open them, but optichrom is great for that, stings like a bee for a few moments but keeps my eyes normal sized. Oh and Liz Earle eye bright on cotton wool pads make them feel human again. If you can get the doctor to do allergy testing that's really useful because some antihistamines are better than others for each allergen. It is worth checking it out though just to make sure you're not allergic to something else that you can easily avoid (white wine gives my mum the same symptoms).

It does affect my blood sugar though if I don't medicate, makes it go higher, but then my allergy is quite severe and the increase is limited so I'd guess most won't see an impact.

I hope it just goes, but if not it's worth experimenting with different treatments until you get the right one, otherwise summer can be a bit miserable.
