Need some advice have a large blister on the sole of my foot not sure if I should burst it or leave be as I know I have to be careful looking after my feet. Any help welcome.

I would strongly recommend that you air on the side of caution. As a diabetic of any type if you speak to your local podiatry clinic they should see you on an emergency basis. They are best fixed to treat the thing in the most appropriate way possible. It really isn't worth the risk of doing it yourself. I really do not mean to be rude but 'being careful looking after your feet' really does not involve bursting your own blisters. Seek professional, qualified help 😉

As Diabeticliberty says, contact your podiatrist and they will advise or see you as a priority. I had a golf ball size one on my foot a good while ago, I went to the local docs drop in centre and as it had already burst the nurse carefully put the skin that was left of the blister back in place and stero stripped it and put a protective dressing over it until I could see my own practice nurse.

It took ages to heal and was seen every few days to get the dressing changed and the wound monitored.

The mistake I made was I never told the podiatrist team that i had the blister and got told off when mentioned to them at a later date, as they see it as it may need other treatment and what caused the blister in the first place and did you know that you had in the first place. I only knew when i took my socks off when I got home and noticed the wet patch and the broken skin.

Leave it for now. It will probably be smaller by morning. How / why did it form? Best to check the shoes / socks you were wearing, in case seam or rucked sole were responsible. Best wear different footwear tomorrow. Perhaps add insoles if you have to wear same shoes. Blisters on soles of feet are usually under thick skin, so don't rip open, but if that looks possible, then cover with a long strip of adhesive tape, probably extending round bottom to top of foot so it doesn't rub off.

I wouldn't consult anyone for a blister, but mostly because I get several blisters a week (soft skin hypermobile feet and shoes don't mix). I'd just leave it be, don't burst it because it's doing a job (cushioning the area that has been irritated) and protecting your skin from infection, I'd keep a very close eye on it until it heals. If it's very uncomfortable I favour a blister plaster for extra cushioning and it's always best to keep a close eye, if there's any reddening, heat or irritation that a sign it needs attention. If you have any loss of sensation in your feet or are under a podiatrist for anything foot related I would seek their advice though. What works for one person doesn't always work for another though so you need to do what's best for you. I'm quite cavalier about blisters because the several blisters a week comment is not an exageration, but if you're not confident you'd spot a danger sign then medical advice is always best, better safe than sorry 🙂. Hope it feels better soon.

After the time I have had with my feet I can't emphasise enough the importance of getting proper care for your feet. IN some areas you can self refer to the community podiatrist and in other areas you need to see your doctor. Whatever you do, get professional help to look at your foot. If it needs a dressing on it the nurse at your GP practice may even be able to do it for you once the blister is treated.

Firstly, DO NOT Burst the Blister ,depending on area, and if you are already registered, straight to podietry, and get priority care. Having had a Blister burst and not knowing what do, I cannot emphasise the urgency to you. best wishes

The podiatrist will help put things right for you. Because I didn't give my feet due care an attention or get help soon enough for a problem last year I lost three toes so always advise/suggest people get proper help for their feet.

Why I was told by my podiatrist team ring them if I get a blister, as I am in the high risk group and may have an underlying problem that needs looking at. It could be just a case of a phone call to see what they advise or need to make an appointment to check things over.

Definitely see a podiatrist. My ex husband has had 2 toes amputated due to diabetes. Not something to take a chance with.

It's not as easy as it sounds if you aren't already on the Podiatry database - here you have to be referred. I'd been trying to get referred to them for years but only managed it this year. Wanted to know why I hadn't been referred ages ago? You tell me luv ....

Anyway she says, MUST come every 8 weeks come rain come shine, off you go to book your next appointment. 16 weeks after the first one! - Oh said I, but she was most insistent that it should only be 8 weeks. Well that IS the first available one, was the reply.

My experience of podiatry services isn't very good. o_O In February 2014 I finally took myself off to the Emergency Care Clinic at Guy's Hospital (a £15 minicab ride, because the nearest bus stop is for me a painful half-hour walk away; but my GP surgery no longer offers appointments, so I had no choice) as I had had an unbearable pain in my foot for the past fortnight. The next thing I knew, I had been bundled into an ambulance headed for St. Thomas', to treat the huge blister on my right big toe. I was in there about a week.

Then in March 2015 I managed to drop a (full) can of aerosol cream on the same toe (only a superficial injury, but a spectacular loss of blood), and somehow got to Clapham Manor Health Centre, which to the best of my knowledge is the nearest podiatry unit to me, but again it's a ridiculously long way from the nearest bus stops. The wound was dressed, and I was promised a follow-up appointment, and that was the last I ever heard until about a fortnight ago, when they apparently found my details while looking through their old records, and rang me to ask if I still need their services. o_OThey are supposed to be sending out another appointment, but I'll believe it when it arrives. 🙄
