Type 1
Hi guys,

Can any one with type 1 diabetes help me, I have been doing slimming world since October and lost a stone however I find it really hard when my sugars drop and I have s hypo not to pig out just too get the sugars up faster,
I find that the dextros tablets don't get my sugars levels up fast enough.
Can any one suggest ideas as to Wat they have to get there sugars up that isn't really bad for u , I know fruits but again it's slow releasing

Not easy as you need fast acting sugar.
jelly babies are the standard answer. 1jb = 5g carbs. luckily I don't like jbs too much so am not inclined to eat more than I need:D

Hi 🙂 could you try fruit juice? Its fast releasing sugar and still counts as one of your 5 a day! It's still sugar but better for you than a can of coke!

I think some people find it helpful if, after they've treated the hypo with enough glucose, they eat a sugar free jelly, if they're still craving something sweet. I know I could eat sweet stuff for Britain when I'm low, and I find it helps to sit down, set the oven timer for 15 mins, and not be tempted to eat anything else til I've retested my blood sugars. Seeing a normal reading normally prevents me eating anything else at that point.

Julieann - ditto to what's already been said.

However .... do you actually know, with every hypo you ever have, what precise thing has caused them?

Everybody makes mistakes, and everybody will from time to time - like under or over estimating the carbs in something so you have to wrong amount of insulin with a meal - or doing something energetic that you haven't planned for. Daft things also cause hypos unexpectedly till the light dawns and you realise that you always go low in the middle of the ironing or an hour after (or even during!) your plod round Tescos. Or indeed, New Look, trying on clothes - or anywhere else. Sheet - at your age I worked in the centre of Birmingham - and I hit the shops every single lunchtime practically! - hardly ever bought anything of course - but you have to know what's there and exactly where it is in order to invest when you CAN afford it! I must have walked miles every day. But!! - I wasn't diabetic then ....

Have you actually ever been on a proper, organised, Carb Counting course for T1s? - DAFNE, or one of the 'look alikes' offered by various areas? If not, I recommend you do. You get some real insights as to what to do if and when.

Hi yes been on it all been on all the courses, been diabetic for 8 years I have been on the pump twice and didn't like it so back on my pens,
I'm not on as much insulin because of the healthy eating that comes with slimming world. I have hypos when I have eat enough food. Or if I have had to much of a gap I between meals

Can't offer any advice, and this is more of a general comment. Having looked at a number of diet/slimming group diets, most of them don't take into account the need for fast acting sugars when a diabetic (or anyone else) has a hypo.

Sounds like it's time to cut back on the basal.

When it comes to treating hypos though, what are you defining as 'bad for you'? By definition, a hypo treatment has to include calories as you need sugar, which is 4 cal per gram. There isn't any way around this other that taking steps to avoid the hypo into the first place.

I can only suggest that you reserve some calories or points each day for hypo treatment, but it's best to limit the need to treat hypos. If glucose tablets don't suit you, you could try fruit puree pouches, sold for weening toddlers, but popular with runners etc. Around 10 - 20g sugar in a 80 - 100g sachet.

Hi. I assume you are carb-counting with the Bolus? Have you checked the carb content with the SW foods as some can be quite high which will cause large sugar swings. Do you try to keep the carbs down to a reasonable level? Hypos should be an exception rather than the rule if the Basal is balanced and the Bolus ratio right together with controlled carbs unless you are very unlucky.

What I was getting round to was to ask the question - when was the last time you checked your basal dose to make sure it's still right?

It's something you will have learned on DAFNE anyway, and we have to do it in any case when pumping, so now I'm sure you know why and how. Mine changes every couple of months. PITA but there you go.

Anyway - just in case anyone doesn't know how - here are the basic details. Scroll down the page for it.

Unfortunately they haven't yet invented a 'long-acting' insulin that matches my body's needs - plus I was running out of skin I can reach that still has enough reliable absorbency to jab into, so a jab every 2 days is the best for me, together with being able to have what insulin I need when I need it.

Does sound like you have too much sometimes, if it ain't human error with carb counting and other stuff, doesn't it?
